The drought in Georgia is very serious. Images from the region are unbelievable — docks standing on dry land far from Lake Lanier, reporters walking over dusty earth where they once would have been wading in water. It's worth bringing every resource to bear against this crisis — and no, a little prayer couldn't hurt, even if it is a symbolic prayer vigil on the steps of the state Capitol, which Georgia governor Sonny Perdue joined for on Tuesday. Probably not going to yield clear, measurable results, but hey, whatever works. Still, of all the questions a news organization could put to their readers about the drought — how should Georgia and Florida resolve their conflict over water? Do you think the country is ignoring this crisis? Have you been conserving water in your own home state as a result of the drought? — CNN chose to ask if their readers thought prayer would work. News value: Negligible. Edification value: Zero. Humor value: Marginal, but not worth it at the expense of the former. Sheesh.

p.s. This came into us as a tip and a screengrab, so alas, we are unable to bring you the results of the poll. We'd feel guilty about that, but, well, see poll above, and note source.

Update: OH MY GOD THE PRAYER WORKED! IT RAINED IN GEORGIA! That is actually sort of awesome. It still doesn't excuse the poll, though. See report here.

Be careful what you pray for. Another 39 days and 39 nights of rain and Georgia will have a very different pronblem.

I think it depends on what you pray for.

Pandering to religious fanatics is what this country seems to do best now. Perhaps rather than waiting for “God” to answer prayers we ought to find the solutions ourselves. I know it is a radical thought but I seem to remember that America was build by pioneers putting their shoulders to the plough not by a bunch a religious fanatics standing around praying for divine intervention.
