KARL ROVE TO BECOME NEWSWEEK CONTRIBUTOR

New York--Karl Rove, the former White House deputy chief of staff, will become a Newsweek contributor, offering occasional opinion pieces to the pages of the magazine and to Newsweek.com.

"Newsweek has a long tradition of asking practitioners and opinion-makers to offer our readers the benefits of their experience in occasional opinion essays," said Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham. "Whether one agrees or disagrees with Karl, there is no arguing that he has been a critical player in the political world with insights and experiences that we think will give our readers something unique. A great recent example is George Stephanopoulos, who did terrific work for us after he left the Clinton White House in the second term."

Meacham is getting very good at writing pre-emptively defensive press release copy. Though we think Bill O'Reilly will be okay with this one.

(NB: For better or for worse, this is the image I now associate with Karl Rove, thanks to one of the most inexplicably popular posts I ever did at FishbowlNY. Come on, people, I had to spice up Plamegate somehow. Yes, if only Valerie Plame Wilson had looked good in photos.)

6/22/05 Manhattan, NY
"Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 in the attacks and prepared for war; liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers" - Karl Rove

This quote exemplifies Rove's venality and cynicism; the man will say & do anything to gain political advantage.

That Newsweek seeks to better itself by including opinion essays from a liars liar like Rove, indicates their editors are much more interested in generating heat then light.

Apparently their sense of journalistic duty now only extends to increasing market share.

Whats next, a centerfold?

I think the opinion essays should include a mix of thoughtful, reality-based liberals, centrists & conservatives; it makes for a healthy dialectic.

Divisive liars, no matter what their political allegiance do a disservice to all of us.

Let's hope this blows up in Newsweeks face; I for one, don't intend to pick up that rag again any time soon.

calm down, it was taking the job at newsweak or making sex tapes, and well, y'know. newsweak, sadly, has been become irrelevant; issue after issue, substance becomes less. perhaps they'll employ jeff gannon to write an Advice column and rev. ted to pen a Faith column.

I told my wife in 04 that "News weak" was turning into a RepubliCON rag so we cancelled our subscription. How sweet it is to be proven right to my wife!!! On off weeks, "News weak" will have writing from Adolph Hitler so they can "continue asking practitioners and opinion-makers to offer our readers the benefits of their experience".

Not on my dime you won't. "News weak" makes great paper to use when you are stripping furniture, otherwise, no use except to start the fireplace.

Hired because Rove can fairly and objectively report and comment on issues? Cancel my subscription to Newsweek.

So 'Kos is ok but Rove isn't? Sounds like "Fair and Balanced" to me. Two sides of the same bad penny. They're both shit.

Newsweek should put their columns on the same page.

This is the journalistic equivalent of Jumping The Shark.
