KARL ROVE TO BECOME NEWSWEEK CONTRIBUTOR

New York--Karl Rove, the former White House deputy chief of staff, will become a Newsweek contributor, offering occasional opinion pieces to the pages of the magazine and to Newsweek.com.

"Newsweek has a long tradition of asking practitioners and opinion-makers to offer our readers the benefits of their experience in occasional opinion essays," said Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham. "Whether one agrees or disagrees with Karl, there is no arguing that he has been a critical player in the political world with insights and experiences that we think will give our readers something unique. A great recent example is George Stephanopoulos, who did terrific work for us after he left the Clinton White House in the second term."

Meacham is getting very good at writing pre-emptively defensive press release copy. Though we think Bill O'Reilly will be okay with this one.

(NB: For better or for worse, this is the image I now associate with Karl Rove, thanks to one of the most inexplicably popular posts I ever did at FishbowlNY. Come on, people, I had to spice up Plamegate somehow. Yes, if only Valerie Plame Wilson had looked good in photos.)

I have only one thing to say: I will never look at Newsweek again except to check out their advertisers and boycott them.

If Rove writes his column from prison it wouldn't be such a bad thing -- he could give us his perspectives about fixing elections from behind bars.

Newsweek has been going downhill recently, with the addition of a weekly "report" on faith, and with a page devoted to the relative popularity of their own stories. I thought Newsweek's resident free-market kook Samuelson (I believe that's his name) and the ever-pompous-but-always-wrong George Will were bad enough, but to add Karl Rove to the mix simply confirms my instinct to cancel my subscription. Thanks Newsweek, you made it easy for me...

neo con capitalist own the media, and they have been forcing their opinions on us for years. I doubt much will change with Rove on board. They will still be trying to force all Americans to their right wing killem all when a few can profit mentality. From Fox and Rush to Newsweek and even you local paper, its all owned by the same kind of people. I really dont see anything being different.

Well, well...I wonder how 'edited' Rove will be or how often he'll contribute. Otherwise, without a good editor it's merely propaganda spew.

I for one don't think he has anything interesting to add to any political dialog. His opinions are as well known as his criminality

Can't imagine this choice other than to 'balance' Kos. Bad choice either way.

If Newsweek was going for controversy they jumped the shark on this one.

If they were going for value add, this only proves the MSM are mortally wounded and hopefully extinct soon enough.

The two publications I read; Newsweek and The Philadelphia Inquirer are moving right.

The Inquirer now employees Rick Santorum and Newsweek has Rove.

SICKENING!!!

I've never read anything by Rove. I didn't think he could write a coherent column.

I'd be surprised if his writing was any good.

Noooooooooo!

It hasn't been nearly long enough since seeing his name, let alone his face.

The so-called Justice Department should be indicting him over the Plame incident,,,
not holding my breath for that one.

Even Laura hated his dirty politics!!!

NOW can we dump this old canard about the mainstream press being liberally slanted?
