Lou Dobbs "Seriously Contemplating" Presidential Bid

Lou Dobbs for President? Don't laugh. After months of telling reporters that he "absolutely" would not consider leaving his highly-rated CNN show in which he crusades against free trade and illegal immigration, Mr. Dobbs posted a commentary on his Web site last week predicting a surprise new presidential candidate in 2008. The mystery candidate is an "independent populist . . . who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites."

Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time, although it's still unlikely. They spin a scenario under which the acerbic commentator would parachute into the race if Michael Bloomberg, the New York billionaire and favorite of East Coast elites, enters the field as an independent. With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity, and with the public's many doubts about Rudy Giuliani and other GOP contenders, Mr. Bloomberg may well see an opportunity to roil the political waters by entering the race late. If so, Mr. Dobbs then sees a niche for a "fourth-party" candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch.

I use to watch him before my work hours changed and I agreed with most everything he said.

Just because he wants secure borders does not make him a racist. His wife is Mexican.

I'd seriously consider voting for him. None of the leading candidates from either party excite me.

he's one of our best bigots at the moment but he's also sometimes pretty silly. Porky Pig & illegal aliens drivers' licenses in NY quite a leap from 'securing our borders". my wife watches him faithfully, & unless the NASCAR dads can field a bigger blowhard, he's going to be an important player.

I think Dobbs as a one issue candidate will pull more votes from the GOP than the Dems and we can hope that might inspire some evangelist to run an anti-gay, anti-choice campaign and peel off another bigoted segment of the GOP so it's probably a net positive for the chances of the Democrats but the polarization is probably bad for the country as a whole.

I'm a Democrat and I have no problem with his "signature topics". However, it is always easier to take shots from the outside. The devil is in the details. You know what they say, "Pundits are like assholes, no really, they're all assholes". If "Mad as Hell Lou" wants to take on immigration let's hear a plan sprinkled with a little humanity. You know that old "What would Jesus do" stuff.

As far as free trade. I'm a card carrying union member who has actually benefitted by free trade. I'm a longshoreman. But I do no that my brothers in other unions, and todays working man in general, do not have it as well. Free trade needs to be a two way street. What we have currently is a "Free Trade Imbalance Treaty". Way more is coming in than going out. That may get you a $20.00 Barbie made by a 12 year old in China, but it doesn't help the American worker.

When, exactly, did Euro-Americans start paying attention to the law? All this talk about illegal aliens avoids the fact that our country was founded illegally, that all Euro-Americans are illegal, that they have broken EVERY law known to man and their own religion in order to obtain land and gold. The wealth of this nation is based on genocide and slavery - that is a fact. What total hypocrisy! Are you in favor of obeying laws? OK - time to return the land that was stolen from Native Americans! Euro-Americans only obey laws that will MAKE THEM RICH! They enjoy Lou Dobbs because he he so good at distorting facts and forgetting the real history of this country. These immigration laws are immoral and need to be changed to fit our current reality. Just because a law exists does not mean it is right. Slavery was once legal. It was illegal for a woman to vote until 1920. Interracial marriage was made legal quite recently in some parts of this country. Also, where is the empathy for these immigrants. Many of the harshest voices come from religious people that should be paying more attention to their religion. (WWJD?)

The one thing that Lou Dobbs hit on is that the ordinary American is sick of the power elites that think they can continue our government by catering to the big corporations like the robber barons of the late 19th century into the early 20th. Most of Americans earn less than $100,000 yet our candidates running for office claim the "middle-class" is above that amount. We need a candidate that will represent the interests of the majority of Americans not the uber rich.
