Diamonds And Pearls Are A Girl's Best Friend (But Maybe Not Her Question Of Choice)

Everyone is pretty much in agreement that last night's "Diamonds or Pearls?" query to Hillary Clinton at the CNN Democratic Debate in Las Vegas was a total clunker. Now from The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder comes word that the UNLV student who asked the question, Maria Luisa, had not, in fact, expected to ask that question, but had rather prepared a question about the proposed Yucca Mountain site for nuclear waste. Ambinder tracked the story to Luisa's MySpace page, which he excerpted as follows:

"Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN...I was asked to submit questions including "lighthearted/fun" questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance. CNN ran out of time and used me to "close" the debate with the pearls/diamonds question."

Oh, ouch — it's almost worse knowing that someone actually gave the thumbs-up to "diamonds or pearls?" in advance. Here's the CNN response (also pillaged from Ambinder):

Sam Feist, the executive producer of the debate, said that the student was asked to choose another question because the candidates had already spent about ten minutes discussing Yucca Mountain.

"When her Yucca mountain question was asked, she was given the opportunity to ask another question, and my understand is that the [diamond v. pearls] questions was her other question," Feist said. "She probably was disappointed, but we spent a lot of time with a bunch of different candidates on Yucca Mountain, and we were at the end of the debate."

Our take: Luisa doesn't deny submitting the "diamonds or pearls" question, and could have refused in horror...though that's a pretty high standard for a kid to meet in the heat of the moment with a mike in your face and the chance to address the presidential candidates on national TV. It sucks that Luisa is taking heat right now (it's an obit-leader) but it sucks more that anyone at CNN actually THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD QUESTION TO ASK, EVER. Sheesh.

Meanwhile, Ambinder also notes that there are rumblings that the debate audience had a "pro-Clinton tilt"; as we (and others) have noted, CNN's postgame panel featured both James Carville (former Bill Clinton advisor and current Hillary Clinton supporter) and David Gergen, also a Clinton White House advisor (but, to be fair, also for Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush I. Even so, as a counselor to Clinton, it ought to have been noted — particularly when paired with the no-ifs-ands-or-buts-about-it Clintonite Carville). Our take: Did anyone see that postgame wrap-up? Urk. If comments like, "Hillary Clinton was rested and ready" were supposed to help his candidate, then Gergen's not all that much help. The other campaigns ought to be glad they weren't part of it.

Anyone who would allow someone else to "make them" ask a question wouldn't have asked an educated question in the first place.

Contrary to what I usually say about questions, this one was very stupid. It ended on a low note what had been an otherwise good debate.

What's next? Asking if Romney can get 'jiggy with it'?

I'm glad I don't watch CNN. I used to, but they've changed. They are not what they used to be during the 90's...

I watch MSNBC mainly, then C-Span, PBS and BBC...

Sorry, rather than going with that stupid question about jewelry, she should have refused to ask it.

I'm glad I couldn't watch it. It sounds like Hillary had all the cards stacked in her favor...

I think the most interseting & most tell exchange was when Hillary was ask a question about the fica tax cap (at some thing like 97k) & Obama's reply.

She said that removing the cap on the fica tax would hurt the middle class to which Obama replied that only about 6% make that much - thats not the middle class, but Hllary never realy answered the question. IMHO Hillary is no different that the current admin. now, some one like Richardson or Biden would be great.

This "debate" was nothing more than a pro-Hillary campaign event orchestrated with CNN. It was stacked with Hillary supporters, and the post debate coverage was stacked with Hillary sypathizers. The article mentions Carville and Gergen, but also take into consideration that former Republican congressman J.C Watts was part of the panel. It's no secret that EVERY Republican wants Hillary to be the nominee. Her candidacy is there only hope for retaining the White House, and Mr. Watts had nothing but praise for her. It was a disgusting display of how desperate the Clinton campaign AND CNN is to get Hillary back on track, and was a direct response to her horrific previous debate performance and to being completely crushed by the Obama campaign in organization and strength at the IOWA Jefferson - Jackson dinner last weekend.

I have to say, people who are getting incensed about this just make the left look like a bunch of whiners. WHO CARES? It was a stupid question. The girl should never have written it. AND submitted it. She should have known that CNN always ends the debates with dumbass questions, and there was a chance they'd pick that one.

Meanwhile, people are acting like Hillary wrote the question and arranged to have it asked, or that CNN was trying to either boost or take down Hillary. Really, CNN is not that calculating. If you look at most of their programming, they really have no idea what they're doing anymore.

And finally, why is there such vitriol against Hillary on this site? It's disproportional to the national opinion of her (Democratic, at least). Maybe if Barack Obama weren't running such a horrible, invisible, furrowed-brow-at-the-debates campaign, you wouldn't have to come on here and shout at Hillary supporters.

I am guessing the next thing the Post will be reporting is that Hillary gave CNN the questions to ask. Bush plants fake reporters and only speaks in front of supporters, Fox News openly backs Giuliani. Give it a rest, is this so unusual.

I wonder when people will get it. EVERYTHING IS STAGED! Go back to the Hillary Obama exchanges..listen closely. Its like they are reading lines, I know they practice answers but this is ridiculous.

The questions from he audience like this one made me sick. They should let people ask REAL questions.

Hillary had already dodged the nuclear power question and giving the issue more time was making the sponsor, the Cola Lobby, nervous.

At least she wasn't a male prostitute like Jeff Gannon who visited the White House some 200 times under the pretense of being a "journalist".

Fox is supporting Giuliani as the GOP candidate and the larger Republican establishment is rooting for Obama as their preferred Democratic candidate. Dems shouldn't get fooled by the polls showing Hillary not rising over 50% in a general election. The simple truth is that in the general election, Obama can be more easily Swift-boated by a modern version of the GOP's "southern strategy." They won't be able to do that easily to Hillary.

So, like, the Hillary people, like, held a thing, like, you know, a gun, to my head and, like, made me ask the question.
