Update: Digg Reverses Ban On Fox News Porn Parody

The Huffington Post just received word that Digg.com has reversed its previous decision to ban Brave New Films' "Fox News Porn" parody.

In a statement on the website, Digg founder Kevin Rose states:

Hey everyone, we temporarily banned this last night. We flagged it as a potential TOS violation, but after looking into it further we promptly unbanned it. Our fault. Digg on.

Reached for a statement, Brave New Films' Robert Greenwald said, "I am pleased to see that Digg has joined the more then one million people who have watched 'Fox Attacks: Decency" and FoxNewsPorn. Now we urge everyone to write, call, and visit the advertisers on Fox and let them know that they are paying for this smut to be send across the airwaves."

What is the point here?

I have never seen Digg. To my Wiki-based understanding, Digg is a news site with a format designed to allow "democratic, user-controlled" editorial decision making.

Digg is like HuffPo's HuffIt feature. Unlike HuffPo, Digg uses solely the "user as editor" format.

HuffIt is currently on hiatus and is being redesigned. So evidently its first release wasn't a great success.

Is this story a dig at Digg for the benefit of a new and improved HuffIt?

I love HuffPo and I don't miss HuffIt at all.

The editorial content of all news media is ultimately dictated by the owners. And the publication's format has nothing to do with that decision making.

I used to read Slashdot until I just got totally fed up with the interference by Rob Malda and the people who suck up to him. I used to read Digg until I just got totally fed up with the interference by you and the people who suck up to you.

I now read Reddit. It's so much better than either Slashdot or Digg in SO many ways, especially in the way that not only can anyone submit a story and it can be seen, but in the way that there's no dictator and suckups to the dictator who is editing the submissions and comments on the submissions.

Now, don't you feel just a little silly about your previous post, in which you assumed it was done on purpose because Fox somehow controls Digg? A little knee-jerk, maybe?

Perhaps it would have been more prudent merely to publicize the fact that the video was banned, not assume the reasons why it happened. Or at least, given Digg a couple of days to react (after the publicity) before jumping to these conclusions.

This is a remarkable increase in efficiency for Fox News. Usually Fox News has to wait for Fox to do something outrageous that they can get mad about. Now they are cutting out the middle man and increasing efficiency 50% by doing the outrageous stuff themselves.
