The Nielsen numbers for online traffic at newspapers, which came out yesterday, show a significant jump in unique visitors to The New York Times for October.

In reaching 17.5 million uniques, the paper had its best month ever, a Times spokeswoman told me. The numbers are up from 14.6 million in September.

The NYT will really flourish once it adopts the interactive approach of the Washington Post that permits readers to post comments at the conclusion of stories. There is no need for a pseudo-ombudsman/woman when the readers are given a forum to elaborate, compliment, add to, deride, or criticize column or article in the paper. I frequently learn as much from the comments, after checking out referenced cites, than I do from reading the column.

Gee, Blinky, I don't think the story is so trivial. As soon as the paper dropped the stupid Select thing I immediately made the Times my homepage again instead of the Washington Post. The Post has an editorial policy equalled only by the Wall Street Urinal--ugh. Naturally the Times has that piece of shit David Brooks, but he can be overlooked. At least now I don't have to badger my friends for Maureen Dowd forwards and I don't have to see pictures of Novak or Krauthammer on the Post. Better yet, I was right all along when I sent the Times an e-mail the day they started that circus telling them they were crazy.

Yawn. Another trivial story on Huffingtonpost.
