The Earth is hurtling toward a warmer climate at a quickening pace, a Nobel-winning U.N. scientific panel said in a landmark report released Saturday, warning of inevitable human suffering and the threat of extinction for some species.

As early as 2020, 75 million to 250 million people in Africa will suffer water shortages, residents of Asia's megacities will be at great risk of river and coastal flooding, Europeans can expect extensive species loss, and North Americans will experience longer and hotter heat waves and greater competition for water, the report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says.

Way more critical to the survival of life on earth is the ongoing destruction of the marine biosphere. I can't wait to read the inevitable denials.

when will the media start reporting on the greater abundance of food we can grow now?

At 4.5 billion years of age
the earth no doubt chuckles at
the diversity of the 1783
odd comments so far generated
on this fractious topic.

Through all the observation,
statement, viewpoint,
science, risk, reason,
politics and economics,
one thing is sure.

Earth is gonna have the last laugh...

Start now
in empathy...

re: "...how many loser species have come and gone..."

time to add at least one more of note to that list. the human species. too greedy; too aggressive; and too self-centered for its own good.

its like kafka said, 'there is hope - just none for us.'

Look for this issue to get further "hystericalized" in the immediate future becasue the polls show fewer & fewer people are buying this rubbish. The "window of opportunity" is fading fast.

The kooks can't even get schoolchildren to believe their nonsense.

Nice picture by the mighty HuffPo, however. Obviously Africa.

Wonder which decade it was from? The 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's or this one?

Africa, the libs' favorite playground, never changes.

Seems to me a little industrial carbon emission would improve things there.

Nice to see that all the Reich-wing whack jobs showed up to pay their respects to Al Gore.

This planet is at least 4.5 billion years old and it was capable of sustaining life for 3.5 to 4 billion of that. I wonder how many loser species have come and gone in that time. The natural resources of the planet don't go any where the surface is just remade again and again from within. Dead end species are just rolled in with everything else, thats why there is no evidence to find. Mankind is looking more and more like a dead end specie. There is probably an exterterestial betting pool on how long we will last. Mankind has one really big problem called greed. As long as this is our main motivating force, we are headed for extinction. How much can I get from whoever including stealing from babies and little old ladies and not get caught. People will lie to anyone for money. People who claim to be religious are pathetic. I can do anything I want as long as I go into some building somewhere and confess it to another. And the best part of this is that person can't legally tell anyone like the law enforcement people.

If we are too much of a parasite to mother earth, maybe she'll just get rid of us. Maybe just explode a bunch of volcanoes[like Tambora...or Krakatoa] at once.....that should poison everything on the surface. Anyone see T-Rex around lately? Supposedly a meteor did them in.....but alot of vilolent vulcanism will poison the whole planet.

I just hope they keep good records of all the people who are fighting the scientific reports on Global warming and Na sayers for in the future. Because if the scientist are correct, I am 100% sure they will be pushing themselves to the front of the line insisting they are entitled to hand outs now, and more than the others, and then whine and whine about the horrors of Global warming and blame Clinton.

Whether the radical topographical and weather changes we are experiencing come from sun spots, fossil fuels, or my wife's purse makes no difference. The very public enterprises that are required to mitigate what our Nobel Laureate's (not some feral white trash in Washington) tell is radical global warming are also the very enterprises that we need to start doing ANYWAY. Massive infrastructure and alternative regional energy planning funded on the level of NASA to get us out from under total oil domination and all the inorganic filth that comes from excessive oil use. Bring back the vocational high schools and totally revamp the tax code to raise the revenue. We have enough fundamentalist whackos in our own country without deliberately allowing our foreign and domestic policies to be manipulated by those in foreign countries. Lay the track to lessen automobile and air travel and all their ancilliary costs, particularly for our older and younger citizens. Take a hard look at the overpopulation in our own country and get our population more in line with our resource base. With the dying-off of the war babies this may be the only opportunity we have to retrieve the carrying capacity of our environment for our posterity. Our Nobel Laureates are also telling us that we are 100 million people over the carrying capacity of the present environment in the U.S. After this last surge of illegal immigration we need to close the border no matter what David Rockefeller, the Ford family, and the Trilateral Commission want. And let's put it out there: if some of our financial and industrial oligarchs don't want us to have a long term conservation, energy, transportation, infrastructure, and population plan, then they should gather up all their money and all their families and all their private institutions and go out into the world and take these chains from their shoulders. Let them go to China. As we now see, they prefer to live in a totalitarian capitalist state, anyway. And be sure they take all their mutant children with them so they do not breed here.

Bush's hearing must be bad, too. The UN said they looked forward to the White House working "constructively", not "destructively." But this is a man who says our children is learning, so we should assume he uses that same intelligence to determine the condition of planet earth.

The greed and stupidity of mankind, accelerated by neocons, will result in a planet that will not sustain us. The microbes will win out in the next millennium, and all your screeching will not change the inevitable. You cannot fill the atmosphere with the wrong gases and not expect consequences. Neocons will never get it, their children will though.

The Bush White House conveniently asserts superiority in scientific knowledge and analysis (actually a derivative of a faith-based policy, when you think about it. "You must BELIEVE that the W.H. is a genuine authority on the subject.") when it suits its needs. Of course, we can't expect a reasonable critique of a research method. There's nothing beyond the soundbyte with them. It's a dash and sing, but with no substance, perfectly synchronous with corporate media's love of a 20 second message.

Aren't we lucky?

Planet earth will react to what we're doing to it, no matter how much the naysayers protest. I'd suggest we should let the scientists do the best they can to analyze what is happening. If we don't, and the climatologists are right, we are doomed.

It is astonishing how many idiots think they know better than the scientists, simply because they don't like what they're hearing.

Is there any hope for America? Roughly 50% don't believe in evolution, believe in fairy tales, so I would say there is no hope. It's very hard to move dead weight like that.

It's amazing that all the naysayers discount scientific evidence, an overwhelming mass of it, and yet 95% of them believe in God, for which there is no evidence.

Humans are hopeless. Let us always remember that the naysayers never got us anywhere, and we'd still be living in caves if we had listened to them, instead of the people with brains who studied the environment in which we live.
