AP:

The animated telling of "Beowulf," who rids a Danish kingdom of the feared beast Grendel, slew the box office over the weekend, giving a huge boost to 3-D films in the process.

The Paramount Pictures release earned $28.1 million in its opening weekend _ 40 percent of which came from special 3-D showings in regular theaters and on Imax screens.

The film did $8 million in ticket sales on 638 screens equipped with technology from RealD, which uses a special reflective screen and polarized lens glasses that moviegoers can take as a souvenir.

"Lions for Lambs" made just 3 Million.

Where were all the lefties?

Maybe they were at the massive demonstrations.

No?

I saw Beowulf on 3ReaDMax. Awesome !.
.
I was a total nerd, but I must admit Beowulf was very hard sell in High School. I never got the full meaning until this movie. I helped fill in the blanks and get real meaning of the golden trumpet and the "red glow" beneath. So, I e-mailed my favorite English teacher, and thanked her for making me interested in old classics. And, I got a response telling me I made her day.
.
Life is Beowulf !

A different perspective on this movie:
I would much rather see a cartoon movie of Beowulf than a cartoon movie of the Battle of Thermopylae. When people go to see Beowulf, they do not think they are learning about a real historical event. I am so sick and tired of hearing people espouse about what a great movie "300" is, when they have next to no idea of what happened at the battle, and how it figures in history. Too many left that movie thinking that the English-looking Greeks inevitably defeated the Arab-looking Persians, because that is what happens when Westerners and Easterners do battle. Too many of those same people, if they actually looked at a Greek, would recoil in fear and disgust.
What's next, cartoon versions of D-Day where the allied soldiers perform magic against the spittle dripping Germans? Or maybe cartoon versions of the Battle of Tora Bora, where Osama and Al Qaeda are driven out of Afghanistan by the brave Republicans, instead of escaping because of the incompetent Republican leadership?

Let the cartoon movies stick to fantasy, where we can all have a good escape for a couple of hours, and leave the history to producers who at least give a damn.

If people had any idea how hard the Beowulf staff worked on this film, they would have a completely different perspective. Congrats to everyone who contributed to the kick-ass VFX.

Sweets -- looking at the figures and reading the reviews, it is worth every moment of missing you. I am really proud of you.

I have to say,it wasn't bad, though in places,it looked like a an old Playstation game.

By the way,the CGI Angelina Jolie looks a lot better than the real thing does nowadays.

It wasn't bad. Beowulf is the hottest sexiest hero to come along in a while, and the 3D was fun.

The only thing that got (s)layed this weekend was a CGI rendering of Angelina Jolie.
