Kanye West performed in Paris Saturday night, but when he tried to sing "Hey Momma" he broke down instead. Band members came to comfort him. His mother Donda West died following plastic surgery one week earlier.

The imperative for a man to reject his mother is probably most stringently enforced among white anglo-saxon protestants. This is, after all, the demographic that produced the TV show "Father Knows Best." A WASP man who defies this rule by caring about his mother runs the risk of being called "mama's boy," or "sissy."

We've come a long way since the days when Abe Lincoln was able to get away with saying (paraphrasing from memory), "All I am or ever hope to be I owe to my angel mother."

"Bad-Ass" Kanye is now crying for his mommy. He never had any street cred.

After board certified plastic surgeons turned her away she goes to a charlatan black uncertified 'surgeon' who has permanently scarred many women because Oprah endorsed him. All in pursuit of a 'younger' hot body to sleep with younger men. The Hollywood dream - just another nightmare.

Having an immediate family member of my own pass-away(due to an incurable and very rare genetic disease), I understand all the pain that Mr. West is going through. He is still in shock and is just now beginning the grieving process. It will take many years, but he will find happiness again. He is very very lucky to have so many people by his side supporting him and his family through their time of grief. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Kanye West and family. - God Bless.

I am not sure the word breakdown is a realistic expression for someone shedding tears of love and loss, it sounds more like the kind of word used by those who are incapable of honesty and sensitivity in their personal lives and excuse me I have to call my momma and tell her I love her.

I have a deep respect for Kanye. He's gone through some really tough times in life and this must be just devastating for him. To get up on stage and cry...well he definitely stands out among celebrities, in a good way.

I also want to say how nice it is to see a huffpo thread without any sarcastic hatred and nonsense.

I can’t imagine his pain. He should probably take some time off to mourn her. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

I can't recall from which television show this line came, nut I remembered it when my mother died and when my first wife (The mother of my two children) died: "No matter what age you are, when your mother dies you're six years old"

This post is not responsive to the thread it is about the thread. In reading the reponses in the thread of people's heartfelt condolences and well wishes to Kanye gave me an incredible uplift. Why is it that it sometimes takes a tragedy for people to express their love and kindness to other people? I don't have the answer but every time I witness it, it becomes the wind beneath my wings. My thanks to all who expressed their love to this young man and thanks for being wonderful human beings.

The hardest thing is to lose your mother. I was 54 when mine died six years ago and I still mourn. My kids lost their Dad in June, and their grief is still very fresh. It breaks my heart to see someone in so much grief.
Kanye, obviously your mother loved you very much. At some point in her life she realized that she would be the cause of the most intense grief you will ever suffer. And the pain it probably caused her, knowing how her death would hurt you, was very real to her. I'd be willing to bet if she could talk to you know, she'd tell you the last thing she ever wanted was for you to be in pain. And she'd say, grieve, be angry, curse God, accept it, and then bring out all the old good memories and be happy again. Because your happiness is all she ever wanted.

Kanye...Peace to ya.
My mother died 25 years ago. I still have good thought of her. Every now and then...cry. Blood is blood. Never forget.

"In Memoriam - Dr. Donda C. West

Kanye West, his family and friends would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country since the death of his mother, Dr. Donda West.

After working in higher education for 31 years, Dr. Donda West and Kanye West co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with the mission of helping to combat the severe dropout problem in high schools across the country. The first and signature initiative of the Kanye West Foundation is Loop Dreams. Designed to capitalize on students existing interest in hip-hop, Loop Dreams challenges students to learn more about what’s behind hip-hop culture in order to help them develop skills, express themselves creatively and be empowered.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. West's name to the Kanye West Foundation/Loop Dreams Teacher Training Institute.

Please mail your greatly appreciated tax-deductible donation to:

That crowd was amazing. They never wavered in their cheering or applause. If that concert was in America, there would have been a sense that something wrong was happening. I bet the crowd would have gone silent. Wow. Viva France.

Man I feel for this guy. What a tragedy his mother dying. I remember a guy telling me to listen to his album one day, and the next day he was telling America, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," and thinking to myself, "well now I have to listen to him. Anybody brave enough to do that on live, national tv has got my vote."

Then, when I heard his music, my friend was right. It was the most interesting blend of different musical styles I've heard in years. I don't want to call it jazz or hip-hop because it would diminish it's originality, but it has some of the flavor of those styles, but something completely original, as well.

Kanye, I hope you feel the respect and love we have for you. Seriously, you're one in a million. I'll bet your moms was too.
