New Merrill CEO's Estate Is So Big, Has Five Addresses

John Thain's country estate is so big that the new Merrill Lynch CEO has five different addresses for one palatial property that spans three separate towns.

The size of Thain's private home in Westchester set neighbors' tongues wagging of late when it became known that the Merrill chief pays property taxes in excess of $150,000 a year in two different towns - Harrison and Rye.

At least this plywood and Tyvek palace won't last long enough to become some idiotic museum crammed with the pseudo-art stuff he will most certainly fill it with. 100 years from now it will be a huge eye sore surrounded by even bigger eye sores.

I don't know why you would want to pay to heat and cool a 14 bedroom house. I always figured that most of these people didn't get rich by pissing money away like that.

As other commenters alluded to it has 5 addresses but it's not really that big, owing to where it's located in a state that has legal 'towns' and 'townships' if it was located in the west their would be no multiple addresses as there are no towns mostly in the west and would only have mult addresses maybe if it's on a corner. Besides I thought the biggest owner was Ted Turner who owns a big chunk of the intermountain west. Jeez 10 acres is small pototoes now if the HOUSE is 10 acres that might be newsworthy (but really kinda silly). And why whine about taking 20 min to the door at that wealth level you probably have a helicopter or private jet to take you around having a car would be so upper middle class.

Obscene. These CEOs steal us blind, ship our jobs overseas, hire illegal workers, all to pad their stock prices and therefore their pay and bonuses. They take so much money, they just gotta put it somewhere!

I read somewhere that most of these big CEOs are the poorest givers to charity. The level of greed is appalling.

Ok, I did some checking to put this in terms most can understand. According to Wiki-make your own -pedia, the average Wal-Mart supercenter is 197,000 sqaure feet.
10 acres = 435600, or roughly 2.2 walmart supercenters.

Yup, all paid for by all the suckers who think Merrill Lynch are helping to make them rich too.

Now I do have to say some of the things they say in the article are pure bullshat. Takes him 20 minutes to go from the front gate to the back of the lot, and then say its at least 10 acres.

First of all, I was born and raised in the middle of farm land, so I know how big 10 acres is, and its not that big. depending on the property lay out, it would take him 2o minutes if it was very thin and long plot. Or, he has medical problems, or both.

43560 Square feet in an acre
43560 x 10 = 435600 sq. ft in your 10 acre plot
square root of 435600 = 660 (liner feet, one side of square.
660 x 4 = 2640 (the perimeter of your plot.)

Still, its a mighty big yard, and even bigger house. And Merrill Lynch caused me to lose a hell of a lot of money, and then said it was my fault because I didnt tell them exactly what money to move and where to move it. I only told them to do something to stop me from losing so much back in 2000. My response was, if I knew when , how much, and where to move it to, then why would I have hired your services?? I thought that is what a personal financial adviser did? Oh course they never replied.
