Japanese shares closed lower on Monday as continuing worry about the US credit crisis prompted investors to lock in early gains, sending the benchmark Nikkei index to its weakest level this year.
Wall Street's rebound on Friday and a softer yen helped the Japanese market open firmer but the subsequent weakness across other Asian markets later dragged the key indexes to negative territory.
