Newsweek's Steven Levy previews Amazon's (AMZN) new $400 Kindle e-book in 4,757-word cover story. Amazon, he says, believes it has created the "iPod of reading." (We're also liveblogging the Kindle launch here).

We have yet to see the device ourselves, but we already know that Amazon's wrong: No matter how nifty a gadget Jeff Bezos' company has created, it won't have the same impact on publishing that Apple's (AAPL) iPod had on the music business.

The other problem is Digital Property Management,
Any book over 35 years old should be free if the author is dead.
2010, Benchley is dead, the book Jaws is public domain. 2010 and Spielberg is dead, Jaws movie is free.

Repeal the Dole-Bayh intellectual property law.

Too expensive ($400 a pop), no color, and you can't really do anything but read books. What were they thinking?
