Days Before Thanksgiving, Dems Draw Line In The Sand On Iraq

Democratic House leadership drew a line in the sand over Iraq War funding today, setting the tone for a messaging battle that will likely play out over the Thanksgiving break.

Speaking in front of a press gaggle, Reps. David Obey, D-WI, and Jack Murtha, D-PA, reasserted that there was enough money to fund the war through February, and that if the President wanted the additional $50 billion passed by the House of Representatives, he merely had to tell Republican leadership -- which filibustered the measure in the Senate -- to change its stance.

"Let me repeat," said Obey, "the money has already been provided by the House of Representatives. If the president wants that $50 billion released, all he has to do is to call the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, and ask him to stop blocking it. That phone number is (202) 224-2541, in case anybody's interested."

Prior to House Democrats passing the $50 billion appropriations, President Bush had called on Congress to fund the entirety of his $196 billion war supplemental request. The President has used the difference in dollar figures as well as the impasse in the Senate to raise concerns that the troops in Iraq are going unfunded and other foreign policy missions were being squeezed. Obey attacked that notion as well.

"The Bush Administration is promoting a lot of stories over the past week about nasty actions in the Pentagon that will have to be taken if Congress doesn't provide a bridge fund for the Iraqi war," said the Wisconsin Democrat. "Like so many other things in this town, those stories have things backwards."

As reported by the Huffington Post, the Democrat war supplement proposal is the party's most aggressive funding measure since taking over Congress. In addition to insisting on a full withdrawal plan the bill would also require that troops be fully trained and equipped before being sent into the field and that the government abide by the Army Field Manual with respect to prohibiting torture.

Reflecting the frustration with the Republican Party's obstruction of the measure, Obey declared at today's conference that: "I would be happy to provide them with the entire $200 billion that they've requested for the remainder of the year -- of next year, I should say -- if the administration accepted these modest and reasonable conditions."

Despite the tough rhetoric, few people inside or out of government anticipate that the Democrat's bridge fund will become law. The impasse between the two parties remains relatively wide and President Bush's veto looms in the distance. As such, much of the battles to be waged over the upcoming vacation weekend will likely focus on messaging, with the Democrats framing the war as a disastrous policy and unevenly burdensome.

"This week around our Thanksgiving tables there'll be two families," said Rep. Murtha. "One who say they support the troops -- and they do -- but they have sacrificed very little. They haven't had their taxes raised. They haven't been drafted, and they don't really participate in the war. The other are military families who have husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters in the war theater. It's them who shoulder the burden of the president's Iraq policy. America owes them our thanks on this Thanksgiving weekend."

Iraq funding?
Remember, this is the administration that took $12 billion in shrink-wrapped $100 bills to Iraq, then watched it disappear because of "poor accounting procedures."
In the year after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, literally tons of cash was sent from New York to Baghdad for disbursement to Iraqi ministries and U.S. contractors. Using C-130 planes, the deliveries took place once or twice a month with the biggest of $2,401,600,000 on June 22, 2004, six days before the hand-over.
The Bush administration has expressed blithe unconcern about the vanished billions — almost as if they knew the money was sitting safely in the numbered Swiss bank accounts of corrupt Republican officials and their supporters.
We do not live in a democracy any longer. We live in a kleptocracy.

Odd. But why haven't we heard from the usual conservatives who post on here, about the wounded vets having to return bonuses. What's the problem trolls? Didn't Hannity or O'Reilly give out your talking points for this one?

The Dems have already capitulated on this Bill, as it funds the war and does not require Bush to pull out. It also does not require all troops out.

The Dems have also capitulated on their own symbolic Bill by making it clear they will not provide the funding this year. That tells Bush they'll fund it next year, on his conditions.

So it's a win-win for Bush. He attacks the Dems and gets them to symbolically defend their symbolic funding Bill and gets them to capitulate in an election year. And if worst comes to worst, he still gets his funding with no mandates to withdraw and with the next Pres. committed to remaining in Iraq.

Who loses? The troops, who continue to get killed and maimed and to kill and maim without end -- the Iraqis who also continue to get killed and maimed without end -- the American people, including our children and grandchildren who see all domestic needs curtailed to fund the war and serious, negative macroeconomic results as a result of the war.

Why do the Dems capitulate? Because they support the war and want it to continue while they also want to appear to oppose it so they can attract the vast majority of votes from an electorate whose vast majority opposes the war. Now even stalwart anti-war people like Lee, Waters and Wolsey have joined the murderous ranks of those who want to kill and maim our families and Iraqis.

" Wounded have to return bonuses" Hey. Business is business. If you can't produce ,you're out- that's how the free market works. Just ask George Bush or any Republican for that matter.

The Democrats have got to stick by their guns and liberals and progressives have to keep the pressure on them to do what they were elected to do, an alternative to Bush. Furthermore, they have to claim credit for the decline in Iraq violence because as a congress they demanded results in Iraq which wasn't the case when Republicans were in charge. Also, Bush requested an additional $46 billion which is no necessary because the Iraqi violence has decreased.

I see the Dems are getting more and more desperate as news from Iraq get better every day. You moonbats only have a very short time to declare SURRENDER. Wait much longer and Nancy will have to put out the word "Would someone please find someone still alive in Al Quida in IRAQ so we can SURRENDER. We can't have a situation where America actually wins this thing. Dang we picked the wrong side AGAIN"!

Finally, the Democratic actions we have been waiting for. No senseless name calling, no dirty tricks, no lies, no spin, none of the things we have become so used to during the GOP reign of incompetency and treason. Just plain old fashioned boring patriotism and competency from the Democrats.
It will be real nice when I can turn on my TV at night and not have to find out what are the latest disasters that the GOP are bringing onto the nation, and onto the world.

And stick to it this time, damn it.

If you roll over again to this coward Bush, I will personally come to Wash. DC and kick your asses down the halls of Congress.

I can't believe it, BushCo threatens to strand our US military so the blackwater mercenaries can get home first? So Here in the USA we have only exhausted troops on rest rotation versus rested mercenaries? Mercenaries Loyal to the far right BushCo?

I don't think so, Bring our military home first! The blackwater folks are partially responsible for our problems in Iraq with their indiscriminate shooting.

History shows us that it is not a good idea for a private mercenary army loyal to a wannabe king Bush to be home when our own volunteer military is left to do rear guard for the retreat from Iraq.

At the very least, the draw down must be equal for the US military and the mercenaries.

It's all an act designed in consultation with Howard Dean, the DNC and various other unnamed overpaid whatevers.

It's the lead-in to Thanksgiving. Correct me if I'm wrong. But have the Democrats EVER followed thru on anything? Haven't they ALWAYS given in to the necons? Money and power are more important than doing the right thing. Until they actually say no and don't back down, all of this is total s**t. All the posturing, pundits on the cable channels and the rest of it. It's one big gravy train and everybody from Pelosi to Chris Matthews just keep right on going and laughing in our faces.
