Senator Hillary Clinton, D-NY, announced today that she will forgo CBS News' upcoming presidential debate unless the network can reach a resolution with its employees, who have authorized a strike.

"The workers at CBS News have been without a contract for close to two and a half years," the Senator said. "It is my hope that both sides will reach an agreement that results in a secure contract for the workers at CBS News but let me be clear: I will honor the picket line if the workers at CBS News decide to strike."

In issuing the statement Clinton becomes the first Democratic candidate to publicly state her refusal to cross the picket line. Others in the primary race have expressed solidarity with the CBS writers.

CBS News is slated to host its first Democratic debate on December 10 at the network's Los Angeles studios. Last week, however, approximately three-fourths of CBS News' 500 employees (writers, desk assistants, graphic artists, and assignment editors, mostly) voted to authorize a strike. Employees at the news station have been without a contract since April 2, 2005 and have scheduled a negotiating committee to meet on the situation following the Thanksgiving break.

Three weeks ago, the entertainment and screenwriters of the Writers Guild of America (which also covers CBS News employees), began a strike of their own, after negotiations on a new contract for the union's 10,500 members hit an impasse. These members of WGA are seeking a percentage of the retail price of movies and television episodes downloaded on Internet; something to which the studios have yet to agree.

Democratic presidential candidates have made the strike a forum for demonstrating their pro-labor credentials. On Friday, former Sen. John Edwards joined the picket lines at NBC's studios in Burbank, proclaiming that the WGA Strike was a "fight for justice." Clinton's refusal to participate in the upcoming debate, however, is the most forceful stance yet.

"America's unions are the backbone of America's middle class and I will always stand with America's working men and women in the fight to ensure that they are able to earn a fair wage," the Senator said.

That is cute. They are ahead so do not want more debates. This puts the pressure on Edwards, Kucinich and Biden who are the pro-union to also drop out, thus canceling the debate or if they don't opening them for Clinton smears.

Good move Mark Penn.

Hillary's answer to Karl Rove.

Great move in support of the strikers, and a smart move politically. I'm sure the other Democrats will follow suit as a debate without Hillary will be concidered all but meaningless. If CBS does scramble and gets a settlement with its employees Hillary can take partial credit for it and say she was the first to refuse to cross the picket line. As much as some here would like to say otherwise, this is clearly a win-win for her.

It's not that she is using the situation for political gain. All politicians behave that way. It's just that this is so totally dishonest. She gets her money from corporations; she shills for corporations; she cannot be pro worker and pro corporation at the same time. We cannot forget that her husband is responsible for the mega power grab by communication corporations. Refusing to cross a picket line for one debate out of dozens of debates is hollow. How can folks fall for that?

She just wants to get out of the useless debate, maybe?

Felt the need to bring this as a comment, not just as a reply.

Many here are attacking Bill Clinton, and by association Hillary, for the drafting and implementation of NAFTA. Well if you remember your history, the Co-chairman of the NAFTA commission was none other than Jimmy Carter. So if you are going to attack the Clintons for being anti-labor due to that agreement, you should also attack Carter.

Edwards was first, by striking with the WGA. Making the right decision the first time and not waiting to see what other are going to do. While I'm happy Clinton has come to this conclusion. Don't get it twisted. Edwards was FIRST!!!

Hillary will make an amazing President and I can't applaud her enough for all that she stands for. Anyone promoting Barack Osama Obama has to be out of their minds. America wants a woman in the White House and Hillary is the wisest choice.

Vote Hillary!

This just proves that Marc Penn is the new Karl Rove.

Back here in civilization, most of the vulgar comments on this page would be flagged as abusive, but I don't have time today to clean up after the extreme (read bizarre) opinions of either the left or the right. And as someone noted the other day, there's very little differnce between them: they spew a vile, poisonous hatred toward anyone who disagrees with them.

They've agreed to allow her to use a bullhorn while standing on the picket line threshold in order to serenade the gang. Or answer questions. If she does come, she'll have the MSM eating out of her hand. Hillary's National Night Out/pep rally/tailgate party.

Good for Hillary. It was a very smart move on her part to show support in this manner.

This is the first thing she's led on the whole campaign -- the first move she's made that wasn't a copy of Obama or Edwards. I'm shocked.

Smart, smart. Now let them go on strike. And let Hillary take hot soup to the picket line.
It'll make good pix and won't hurt either that she's also honoring the memory of Clifford Odets.

Good perhaps Gravel can stand in her place and we can get real answers.

If she appears on TV, she's crossing a picket line. If she runs an ad on TV, she's crossing a picket line. She hasn't stopped doing either.
