It's official: The Washington Post Company now gets more than half of its revenues from teaching people how to take tests, not from providing them with news. The company founded as a home for a Washington daily newspaper is now mostly an educational enterprise.

The Post reports in its latest financial statement that Kaplan, its educational division, brought in 50.3 percent of the company's revenues. The newspaper division, essentially the Post, brought in 21 percent of revenues. The rest came from cable-TV systems, television stations, and Newsweek magazine.

I'll bet Newsweek loses even more now that they have Karl Rove onboard. Maybe they thought "controversy sells." Controversy, perhaps, but not from a malicious criminal like Rove. I'm not going to pay to read his trash.

Newsweek has taken a right-ward swerve in the past year and Rove is just the latest sign of that. They published a nasty piece on Edwards with a picture of his home; the caption actually described it as his "mansion" rather than his house. I've never seen that done before.(Romney's huge place was called a home and presented as evidence of his hard-earned success as a businessman.) Clinton's unwillingness to negotiate about a specific issue with a Far-Rightwing Senator was presented as her inability to compromise, rather than HIS inability to compromise or her sense of resolve. -- I just want a reporting of the facts, not editorialing by a writer. I don't watch FOX, I'll make up my own mind. I cancelled my subscription after having it for 8 years.
