Confronting an enormous fund-raising gap with Democrats, Republican Party officials are aggressively recruiting wealthy candidates who can spend millions of their own money to finance their Congressional races, Republican officials say.

At this point, strategists for the National Republican Congressional Committee have enlisted wealthy candidates to run in at least a dozen competitive Congressional districts nationwide, particularly those where Democrats are finishing their first term and are thus considered most vulnerable. They say more are on the way.

These wealthy Republicans have each already invested $100,000 to $1 million of their own money to finance their campaigns, according to campaign finance disclosure reports and interviews with party strategists. Experts say that is a large amount for this early in the cycle.

What better way to redistribute undeserved wealth?

Must be time to find the next Ken Lay, the next Enron. When you do, let me know, so I can sell short - thanks!

Self-financed millionaires? No kidding. Kind of reminds me of Senators Mark Dayton, John Corzine and John Edwards -- all Dems.

In any case, you can thank the geniuses that came up with "campaign finance reform" for this development. Since candidates aren't allowed to take more than $2K of other people's money it gives a huge incentive to promote the rich as candidates. Idiots.

I for one am sick of the wealthy trying to ruin this country by giving tax breaks to millionairs and welfare to corporations and spending our tax dollars on wars that make their cronies richer.

SFW? show me a candidate from ANY party who is not rich? I don't like Ralph but he is correct about the bad influence money has on the political process.

The primary reason is the current crop of Republican politicians, from Bush to Lott to Martinez to Snowe to McCain to Giuliani to Romney and so on, have abandoned conservative principles over the past decade, and like it or not, the conservatives are the real silent majority in this country. Republicans lose when they don't court the Goldwater ideologues, as evidenced by the no-show for Republicans in 2006 and the non-existent fund raising party-wide for 2008.

About the only thing that will get the disenfranchised Republican base to the polls is fear mongering of the consequences of the Democrat candidate's socialistic tendencies (which didn't work too well in 2006). But, the Republicans give little reason to vote FOR them, and the intellectually honest conservatives will again remain home on election night.

The Republicans true colors are starting to come out now. The only thing they have left to sell is the power of 49 Senators, which will most likely dwindle in 2008.

What a bunch of whores.

This is just one more example of the "No Millionaire Left Behind" philosophy of the GOP.

This strategy kind of works, sometimes...

But here's the kicker. The only types that buy into it are morons. They aren't the types that actually MADE the money, most likely, they're the types that inherited it or made it from some kind of cush no-bid contract. These aren't the cream of the crop...these are the playboys and crooks they're looking to recruit.

The guys who made their wealth know what kind of money pit politics is. It's better to invest a little into politics and get a return, but running for office can drain your fortune dry. Especially if you're running for office for a party that is financially strapped, because you can't even expect big donations to counter it.

So, by following this "draft Paris Hilton and Erik Prince (Blackwater, etc.)" strategy, expect more ineptitude and corruption from the Republican Party.

It's not going to get better for them until they change their ideology. It's just so obvious...but until then, it's going to be a load of laughs and scumbag politicians getting federal prison sentences. Well, until they defraud YOU, of course. Then you'll be pissed.

So, Repukes have stopped donating money to elect "their own", eh?

This tells me that the REALLY REALLY RICH Repukes have already converted their immense fortunes into Euros, and are leaving America for more hospitable climes.

Hell, most of them have already made enough off the "War ON Iraq" to purchase their own private islands. And a yacht to take them there.

We've been had, folks. Dems AND Republicans.
