S'funny, I work at a daily metro newspaper, and much the same as Atoosa describes could be said of folks here... come to think of it, much the same could be said of much of our culture.

Maybe it's not just facile magazine professionals who are trying to numb themselves from the inanity of what they've chosen to spend their lives doing -- maybe it's a lot of Americans.
