Crime novelist Patricia Cornwell sat with the UK's Telegraph for a lengthy interview. Generally private, the best-selling author opened up about her 2005 wedding to Dr. Staci Gruber:

"Like Scarpetta [Cornwell's protagonist], I finally feel rooted somewhere. I feel a sense of responsibility and stability that I didn't have before. I hadn't been in a long-term relationship since I got divorced in 1988 and it's hard to live that way. Being with someone who is smart and gives good advice adds tremendously wonderful elements to your life.

"What happened was that I went to Harvard to research neuroscience and was directed to meet with Dr Gruber because she's so eminently respected. It was one of those things: you meet someone when you're not looking. I've never been a soapbox person for gay rights, but now I'm in a same-sex marriage I tend to be more open, because I am outraged that it should be illegal in other states."

"If we were outside of Massachusetts and Staci were in a horrible car wreck, a hospital could forbid me from seeing her. The federal government does not honour same-sex marriage, so couples can't file joint tax returns and, in terms of death benefits, people have to go to extraordinary lengths with lawyers to try to make sure that their partner isn't evicted from the home."

In her recent re-examination of the Jack the Ripper history, she reveals an uncommon sympathy for those with sexual identity issues and it seems like her personal life has integrated her authentic sexuality into a successfull and happy relationship with another kindred spirit. May it long last and run deep. Everyone deserves the same freedom and flexibility in finding the state that brings them the kind of happiness that is most likely to spread and bring more joy to a world where gladness has hidden in the shadows far too long.

I'm not a fan of her work as I am not into that genre. That said? I'm happy that she's happy. I can't believe that there is still a *thing* about being gay in this country.
What did bum me out however is that the pool of datable men for the discerning woman is fairly small and I wondered as I read the snip if this is the future of womanhood for those who want to be partnered. pretty rough unless you're gay or bi, eh?

Were you always gay or converted? Just curious.

Gay religious Republicans are one of God's mysteries. WTF is wrong with these people?

But as for the last comments she makes, I support gay civil unions however they are legally described. But in states that do not provide for that, I would not counsel people to throw up their hands, as she suggests.

A simple will can specify that a person's assets go to their partner. A power of attorney for healthcare can provide that the partner will be the sole decision-maker about healthcare, living arrangements, and other matters, in the event the person is unable to make those decisions for themselves. And a power of attorney for financial matters can also make sure that the partner has access to and control of the money. It may not take care of all the issues, but it can take care of many of them.

None of these documents are terribly expensive, and most attorneys are capable of drawing them up.

I've never read any Patricia Cornwell. But I've seen her numerous times on morning TV. I must admit, this announcement about her new marital bliss, comes as no surprise. I suspected she might be (as my grandmother used to say) 'libyan'.
That said, I hope she rues the day that she ever spent a penny on the party of one (belief).
For the life of me, how can anyone support a party that tells you 'ya ain't welcome!'
I'm also continually amazed that there's such a thing as Log Cabin Republicans!

I am not a reader of her work and don't really know her. But I know a lot of people like her. They never complain or consider issues until it affects them personally.

I have been a longtime fan and reader of Ms. Cornwell's work (although I must agree with a previous poster that her work from "Blow Fly" onward has been...disappointing - perhaps because her personal life finally picked up about that time? If that"s the case, then good for her!).

Anyway, that said, I find it laughable that Ms. Cornwell has the nerve to complain about the current state of same sex rights. Who exactly does she believe is responsible for that? HER party, HER religious right roots, HER government. Sure, as her marriage in MA proves, it's supposedly a state issue, but anyone with any common sense knows that isn't really the case. Ms. Cornwell is a long-time Republican and personal friend of the Bush clan. I also very distinctly remember her actively contributing to and campaigning for the presidency of GW - on a crime platform, but still. I know she"s a huge "tough on crime" and right to bear arms advocate, but Jesus, really? The Bushes? I won"t even address the Cheney's and their treatment of their gay daughter - who lives in VA, the state Ms. Cornwell had to flee in order to live anything resembling an honest and respectable life.

I give her some slide because I understand that she had a very tough childhood and was raised (essentially by the Grahams) in a very conservative environment. However, considering her otherwise very formidable intelligence, I find her political and social judgment to be woefully lacking.

Democrats aren't perfect but they also don't want to burn you at the stake or stash you back into the closet a la the Bush and Cheney Republican party, just because of who you choose to commit your life, love, and bed to.

Continue to support the Republican Party, Patsy, and you'll get exactly what you deserve; your MA marriage nullified if the party that you've so blindly and ignorantly lent your voice and money to is ever able to enact their long desired federal ban on same-sex marriage.

Not to digress from the topic, hopefully Patricia Cornwell will be reading this blog - I am getting tired of Dr. Scarpetta's whining about her relationships with Benton, and Lucy's never-ending sexuality problems. Could you please stick to crime solving ?. Also, what about more on Marino ? Blow Fly sucks !
.
OK, with regards to your wedding - I am having a nightmare just to think that one day, people will wake up with a same sex person in their bed, and it will be just another day. Although I don't approve of anyone being excluded visitation rights to be with love ones. I also do not agree with government intrusions in our lives. Still, same sex gross me out.
.
Honestly, I am trying to understand. So, please forgive if that makes me "uncool". I am really, really trying. Does that count ?
.
Still, I wish you best luck with your ... wi
partner !

Also, a typical Republican comment. Now that it affects her, it's an issue.

Sickert did it!

She's a Republican. Cry me a river. Perhaps she'll think next time before she backs and supports a party which wishes to make her invisible and disappear.

The US government needs to get out of the marriage business.

For Patricia Cornwell and Stacy Gruber congratulations on your decision and a steadfast endurance in acceptance of the accompanying life's terms. Now in my seventh decade, I have witnessed change in many areas and become more optimistic with each new generation. For blogger, Ipitombi, a sincere wish for reflection and finding peace in the form of a twelve-step program for homophobes.
