Pickering Speaks

Sen. Trent Lott's resignation announcement Monday may have woken many on Capitol Hill out of their tryptophan stupors, but speculation over his replacement is not surprising anyone. The focus is on Mississippi Rep. Chip Pickering and Roger Wicker as the most likely candidates to replace Lott.

2007-11-27-pickering.jpg

Pickering announced this summer that he would be retiring from Congress after ten plus years to spend more time with his family. If Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour appoints Pickering to Lott's Senate seat, then he'll be hitting the campaign trail instead of going home. Lott's seat will be up for grabs again in a special election occurring the same day as the November 4, 2008 general election.

And if that's the case, Pickering might find himself answering questions about his cameo in "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." Pickering appeared at a Pentecostal gathering where theories against evolution were cheered and the Chief Justice of the Mississippi State Supreme Court declared that America "will always be a Christian nation until the good lord returns."

Watch the scene:

Has one visited Mississippi lately? That is off the express way and more than just on one’s way to Florida or New Orleans? Stay a few days or more and “tour” the state?
If you have, you will agree with me that not much has changed culturally since the Civil War. As a matter of fact, things may have gotten worse by the fact that these people really believe that their way is right ,and their God has told them to foist their prejudices, ignorance, and hatred upon the rest of this country and the world.
But have solace my dear friends. Because I do believe that someday, some truly enlightened religion will send it’s missionaries to this dark “continent-state” we know as Mississippi, and will convert the poor souls, and show them the way.

You know, in a sane society a guy running for public office seen in public hooting and hollering and mumbling gibberish would be laughed into obscurity.

But in this insane country public hooting, hollering and mumbling gibberish is the fasttrack to elective office.

This gaddamned nation needs psychiatric therapy. Now!

Really, now, if this footage doesn't convince one that religious fundamentalism, regardless if it is Christian, Muslim or Jewish, is a form of self-induced psychosis nothing will.

All religious extremists, Christian, Jew or Muslim, should be required to undergo psychiatric therapy.

To understand Mississippi voters, take a gander at the platform of the state's *Democratic* party, which includes right-wing gems like these:

CHOICE The Mississippi Democratic Party is the party of inclusion and we believe in the sanctity of life.

SECOND AMENDMENT We believe in the affirmation of the Second Amendment as an individual right.

MARRIAGE We believe in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.

When these are the "liberals," you can only imagine the "conservative" viewpoint.

I lived in Natchez, Mississippi -- part of Chip Pickering's district -- for a few years, and the best way I can explain the thinking down there is to say our town of 18,000 (possibly the most liberal in the state) had a phone book with no less than 80 listings for churches.

OMG it's going to be one of those pinheads from the megachurch.

They should be forced to live without electricity, medicine and technology. If they want to live in the dark ages why are they using modern technology? They seem to think that prayer works just as well.

Don't think of it as "speaking in tongues", it's more like "scat singin' for Jesus". Only with no music. Or rhythm. Or point.

I've been talking with my dog lately, and I think I have her convinced of some basic truths about life and politics.... (she does have some common sense type intelligence as some dogs do, though I can't be sure that she really gets it).

what I would never want to have to do is talk with the right wingers about any life/politics issues- that's a real waste of time.
Right wigwam, rwe, maxconfused, etc, etc, etc?

My next task- lipstick and makeup on my dancing pig, maybe I can get ole' Haley to change his mind on his choice for the newest distinguished senator of the great state of Mississississississississippi.

THat whole speaking in tongues thing is particularly entertaining. What purpose could god have for inducing someone to utter absolutely inintelligible gibberish?

There are certainly some places in the south that I enjoy. However, as a rule, I have to say that Lincoln really messed up. He should have let them go their own way. We could have always sent them a little foreign aid over the years.

HE'S the ranting idiot holding Borat's hand at the end of the clip!?

That's jaw-droppingly disturbing.

The State Supreme Court Justice openly defying the law he has sworn to uphold is even scarier.

After seven years of the Grand Neo-Conservative Experiment, America is so far off into batsh*t crazyland... we might as well just effin go for it all the way.

"Oh You Think You're Crazy, I'LL Show You Crazy" can be the new "Don't Tread on Me."

Pickering for Senator!

The boy's not a bad looking chap, and, ain't it a sin, the folks down soufh are suckers for a good-looker, and, of course, looks have usually been a sign of less than sharp intelligence.
