Before the writer's strike, Chevy Chase's return to "Saturday Night Live" segment "Weekend Update" was supposed to be a recurring role.

"I met with Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers and they hired me," Chase told me on Tuesday. "I told them I'd love to come in and do occasional pieces about politics. They're paying me scale, which is more than I was making when I did the show originally," he laughed.

Chase says his first appearance got mucked up by two things. "The writing wasn't so good." Also, he was thrown by the audience giving him a standing ovation. "I didn't want to overshadow the new kids," he says. "I was shocked."

Recycling Chevy Chase is a curiosity, no more. He's probably still talented, but who cares? He's had his day. The Not Ready For Prime Time Players was 30 years ago, folks.

I'm not saying Chevy should be doing golf videos with Tim Conway, but why bring him back to do the same news shtick he did decades ago? They should have him do something different, and use him very sparingly.

The value of SNL is that it is a showcase for up and coming talent. If it becomes an oldies fest, it's all over.

Good Lord, Chevy looks like an old Chinese man, not that there's anything wrong with that!

Chevy Chase used to be amazing...for many years. He got old like Steve Martin. Less funny, more serious, sadness in the eyes. I will watch. GOOD LUCK CHEVY!!!

Chevy Chase was never funny on SNL. Why is he back?

Please stop saying the show has sucked since our original cast. Although flattering, it's not fair and not true. There have been incredible seasons with incredible talent all through the years and I think the cast now is BETTER THAN ITS EVER BEEN!! I love everyone on the show. I think they're all wonderful and unique and idiosyncratic. Chevy has had his ups and downs but if you watch the first season DVDs, you'll see that there's never been anyone like him. We did a commercial parody of an arthritis medicine called Jamitol. It just features just Chevy's
hands. Hilarious. How many people can make you laugh with just their hands?

Chevy; Be the Ball!
Best Wishes to you from a fellow 'old-fart'.

The youngsters'll learn a thing or two, with due respect to Seth, Amy and the Crew.
And acknowledging the contributions of that Andy Samberg fellow.

SNL, like no other show in history, cultivated a legion of funny folks with great "sketch comedy" skill and timing, and on any given week, I suspect many of them would be happy to swing through NBC studios and create funny stuff with their peers.

How often does Rob Schneider work? Or Mike Myers? Or Billy Crystal? Or Bill Murray? How many small-screen veterans like Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Jane Curtain are waiting for something to do next March or next May? How many geniuses like Harry Shearer? Or Steve Martin? Or Christopher Guest have openings during the course of the year when they might like to spend a week in the SNL milieu and give their creative juices a boost?

I think it"s great that Chevy is available to take on the show once again and make it his own, and I hope it paves the way for the other big talents that have passed through their doors to swing through once again, not as "guest stars", but as regular players, on a regular basis. That may rekindle the flame of SNL. it shouldn"t be a matter of money for most of the veterans. I"m sure Chevy could live on residuals the rest of his life, although not as well as, say an Eddie Murphy might live. But don"t you think there"d be some weeks in a year that even Eddie might like to dip himself back in the soup, just to add a little seasoning?

It would be terrific if some of these veterans, no longer needing to "make it", could write for and support some of the up-and-comers on the show, especially the women.

I wish Chevy well and I hope it leads to even more healthy recycling of all of the past talent from SNL. With so much experience to draw on, there"s no reason why the show can"t be revived and once again become "the thing to do" on Saturday night.

I'm too young to have watched the original SNL while it was playing, and I can honestly say and agree that SNL has sucked since the original group. Occasionally it is good, but I've gotten more laughs out of fewer episodes of the Chappelle Show than I have out of a lifetime of SNL. Chevy Chase's sense of humor was frequently ruined by incredibly poor writing. His sense of humor is also incredibly hard to script for if you don't get his style. If you have the time, I recommend anyone pickup Caddyshack and watch how well he plays off the other characters, both verbally and physically. Frequently, there's a separate comedy skit going on within his movie roles. Comedy genius like that doesn't just suddenly leave you overnight, it just keeps getting better with age. I've always thought that Chase would KILL in England on BBC TV. They'd probably get it.

Chevy's son went to my undergrad and he gave a speech at my graduation. It was some of the funniest, filthiest, insanely surreal improv I've ever listened to in my life.

Too bad SNL will never be like that.

Chevy's not so funny anymore and hasn't been in a very long time. SNL hasn't been funny since the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" all left the stage. His comeback reeks of SNL desperation to me and I don't think a spraying of Febreeze is going to make it smell more appealing in the least.

Hey, I'm not the only one who feels this way. At a celebrity roast several years ago, Richard Belzer (reportedly) said, "The only time Chevy Chase had a funny bone in his body was when I f%^#ed him up the ass."

That line still makes me laugh after all these years. Chevy Chase, on the other hand, does not.

I would like to see Dan Rather in there . Done the right way it could raise the bar up to par or above the Daily / Colbert shows.
