Republican Debate

236.com:

Wednesday night the Republican presidential candidates gathered in St. Petersburg, Fl., for the CNN/YouTube debate, and 23/6 was there.

Okay, 23/6 wasn't there, but we were at home, eating tacos and watching it on cable, where we were able to liveblog the entire event. Read on to find out how the candidates performed, who got angry, who got burned, and whether or not the YouTube videos included a question from the dramatic chipmunk.

ABSOLUTELY, that debate might as well have been posted by this site. Not only was the gay general a plant but the young black man is a supporter of Obama and the gal with the question on abortion promotes Edwards. This is only fueling the fire folks. CNN has lost all credibility and should be apologizing to every single viewer of their BS "news". Way To Go Marcasau, that's why I changed my ticket. PROUD to stick it out with the ONLY candidate able to serve as president McCain.

One commenter said "It would be much funnier, if the debate itself weren't so darn creepy. It's like trying to poke fun at a dark cemetery." I agree completely. My point is that most of the offensive ideas expressed in this debate are so far-removed from reason that satire or poking fun at them doesn't even come close to an adequate refutation. I think the applause after Mike Huckabee's stated belief in the inerrancy of the bible proves my point. He tried to obfuscate the truth and appeal to the religious and undecided and they cheered him on with the vigor we know they would. All we have to remember is that a few debates ago he raised his hand when asked to if he didn't believe in evolution, yet there's no criticism of that here, neither is there a substantive challenge to Huckabee's understanding of the universe.

Having said all that the crack about Carson Daly's scab writers was pretty good.

My question is how does this style of blogging add anything substantive to the debate of ideas? It doesn't because it's simply preaching to the choir who already disagree with the opposition. I think what's necessary is a blog that answers candidates responses with real alternatives(or at least highlights a possible alternative) as opposed to humorous observations that contribute to nothing but polarization. I think most Democrats get the fact that they don't agree with Republicans. We don't need a blog to use humor or attempt to use humor to remind us of that fact. What I find hilarious is that people opposed to ideas that others hold can't find a way to criticize the opposition's beliefs in a useful way that changes minds or at least makes people think about things in a different way. This is obviously a childish blog and an attempt at satire that I find wanting in many ways.

This goes beyond blogging because if this is the best criticism that Democrats can offer then it's no wonder mid-western/southern religious leaders are able to brainwash the most pious 'undecided' Americans without challenge. The true believers see their most sacred institutions/beliefs criticized and made fun of here and yet there's no attempt to challenge their ideas with reason. This is the problem with democrats, liberals, social progressives, or whatever you want to call such people. The need to satisfy ourselves in highlighting our distaste for the opposition will ultimately be the biggest laugh of all as we lose election after election. Just because you feel as though you're on an ivory tower of wisdom doesn't mean anything if people don't understand why you're sitting there. Tell them why!

In my opinion, Giuliani provided the most intelligent and thoughtful answers to tonight's Prez. debate questions. Huckabee, McCain and Paul seemed sincere but not as quick or experienced as Giuliani.

It would be much funnier, if the debate itself weren't so darn creepy. It's like trying to poke fun at a dark cemetery.
