Bill Keller announced moments ago in a memo that there will be layoffs at The New York Times. He wrote that it will not affect reporters, but a hiring freeze will be strictly enforced.

He wrote:

While we are committed to retaining our competitive muscle, we will be facing some tough choices about where to save. That is why I must tell you that there are going to be layoffs in the newsroom, for the first time in recent memory. The people who are affected are not journalists, but that does not make this news anyeasier to share.

A dozen positions will be eliminated immediately, including "a number of clerical and secretarial jobs" and management positions in administrative areas.

Is Krugman looking for work? Dowd cashing in a 401k?

Then cut deeper.

How much of the problem with the TIMES and the WAPOST are due to public attitude? Is the public punishing them for their obvious pandering to the Administration, for selling the War? It is the influence of newspapers on the public view that has been its greatest asset. It is unlikely the war's end in Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement, MLK and many other positive changes in the American vision would have come about without the reasoned debate and editorials of these two major papers. I doubt if the eviscerated and emasculated New York Times would have the courage today to publish the Pentagon Papers.
I am sorry to say that the decline in circulation seems to match the decline in respect for these papers.

It makes my J-school degree just another useless piece of paper, much like a degree in philosophy or modern dance.

Time Warner lobbied for a restructuring of bulk
mail rates that favor advertising over content.
Content magazine and newspapers have had a 40 percent increase in postage. Advertising intensive
magazines only a 10 percent increase.

Tax brains, subsidize sales.

If it begins to move into the writers' sphere, perhaps they could save some money by going back to their traditional Judith Miller method: just make up the news. Could have just a coupla guys sittin' there makin' it up over and over again.

And just how much of a pay raise did the top people get at the NYT for the hiring freeze?

With info available so fast via the internet, print media is outdated when it hits the streets.
Also, it sure doesn't help that the bias in the NYT, The NY Post, The Washington Times, et. al. don't report the news, only their propaganda to promote "their" cause. Print media is on the decline in circualation and in advertising revenue and the long term outlook doesn't show any potential change.
Eventually, RIP.

Bound to happen.

A sad tale, but many papers will have to do this. The internet is beating them to death.

Is the NY Times going the way of practically every other newspaper and becoming page after page of nothing but advertising as AP/UPI stories?

As a reader of the N Y Times, I am very sorry to learn of the layoffs.

While the many blogs allow people to vent, they seldom inform the reader as to what is happening in the world. For real information newspapers are essential. TV news is really only headline stuff, and then of only the extremes.

We'd all be better informed and better governed if we have access to honest information, thoroughly discussed if newspapers continue to flourish -- even the blogs might serve us with more accurte venting if he writers had more to go on than headlines of the virulent type.
