Last night, John Ashcroft delivered an address on the Cornell University campus "in the face of shouting dissenters and shrouded protesters." At his last appearance on a student campus, Ashcroft was asked whether he would be willing to be subjected to waterboarding. "The things that I can survive, if it were necessary to do them to me, I would do," he said.....

... In an interview with the Sun conducted just prior to his speech at Statler Hall, Ashcroft did address the question when it was again posed to him.

"The question of whether or not waterboarding is torture is defined by statute. It's not something I can make a decision on," Ashcroft answered. "There are laws about what is torture and what isn't."

Of the four "Singing Senators" Ashcroft is a bigger discrace than Lott, Craig and Jeffords combined.

None of the other three have never been (so far) been a lousy Attorney General of this country.

Janet Reno and Ed Meese might have been faulty but Ashcroft and his replacement Alberto 'I don"t recall' Gonzales take 1st place.

Maybe Craig who won't retire as Senator or Lott who did might take the trophy.

From ABC News:
*******

"For all the debate over waterboarding, it has been used on only three al Qaeda figures, according to current and former U.S. intelligence officials.

As ABC News first reported in September, waterboarding has not been used since 2003 and has been specifically prohibited since Gen. Michael Hayden took over as CIA director.

Officials told ABC News on Sept. 14 that the controversial interrogation technique, in which a suspect has water poured over his mouth and nose to stimulate a drowning reflex as shown in the above demonstration, had been banned by the CIA director at the recommendation of his deputy, Steve Kappes.

Hayden sought and received approval from the White House to remove waterboarding from the list of approved interrogation techniques first authorized by a presidential finding in 2002.

The officials say the decision was made sometime last year but has never been publicly disclosed by the CIA."

"ITHACA " In the face of shouting dissenters and shrouded protesters, former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft stood firmly behind his conviction Thursday that the 2001 USA Patriot Act strengthened America's freedom and continues to protect the country from terrorist attacks.
__________________

About 13 minutes into the attorney general's speech, more than 100 students and Ithaca community members stood up from their seats, turned their backs to Ashcroft and placed black shrouds over their heads. The protesters stood in silence for another 14 minutes before walking out of his speech together.

When the protesters left, Ashcroft responded with "Good," and his supporters in the crowd applauded."

Two points here:

1. ashcroft is back on the drugs/koolade which keeps all of the neocons in line. Now I understand the only decent act in his life, the sick-bed denial to gonzales' request to continue illegal wiretaps. It must have been that because of all the hospital medication, they had to cease giving him Rovezac and his conscience had a chance to surface and do what it could in the short amount of time it had. It's quite obvious he is back on the Rovezac, double doses maybe.

2. A big KUDOS to the protesters for taking the time and effort to show that not all Americans are willing to sit by and let these national leaders think that the evil they are doing is condoned nor accepted by all of the citizens. And their scripted protest was a perfect example
of conveighing their message, that of rejection of ashcroft and his neocon policies and our sense of shame at what they are doing in our name. No one was violent or belligerant, they only stayed 14 minutes after their initial statement, then silently left the speech early, another statement in and of itself. The press had no negative news to focus on that detracts from the protesters' message.

It would be great to see this happen more around the country with any of the cons who rake in these speaking fees while spewing lies, distortions and neocon propaganda.

Well, if waterboarding isn't torture then I guess we owe the Imperial Japanese Military a big apology, since we convicted their officers of war crimes for doing it.

Waterboarding should be shown on tv or the internet over and over as I have no doubt there are pictures video available and no one else should have to suffer to have these made. People should have to face what their government has done for them to get information that is mostly baseless as anyone will say anything to make it stop, anything. That means the outcome of the torture is like with any torture, you will break down and lie your ass off to make it stop. If you are repeatedly asked if you like doing goats/cows/chickens and you are a veggie lover not a meat eater, I can assure you that you will say you fuck goats/cows and chickens morning noon and night after just a few minutes. Any movie you have seen with the hero never breaking doesn't always happen and if it does not for the duration of the torture events. Eventually you fold.

My hope is that when any of the former administration officials show up in public, that they meet some citizens who are fed up to the teeth with them. Once they get out of the bubble in Washington, into the real world, there is a big shock awaiting them. Not one of them should be paid for speeches or articles in magazines. They should just fade from sight, until subpoenad to appear before congress.

Waterboarding, by law - is torture.

However, this is the very reason it is not torture. Because is is against the law, and our President has instructed folks to break this law, waterboarding is not torture because we don't want anyone who has be instructed to break the law to be accountable to that law.

See how easy it all is?

Once he heard they were hastily constructing a national lottery to pick who gets to do the waterboarding, I think he realized public support for his brand of America might be on the wane.

I've got an Ashcroft compromise on part of the problem. If we are waterboarding female prisoners, so long as a sheet is placed over their exposed breasts and diapers cover their privates, it's not torture.

I am guessing water boarding would be one of those that he couldn't survive. Why didn't he just say so and quit the damn backpeddling??? Or is he another one covering for this Pre$ident???

"The question of whether or not waterboarding is torture is defined by statute. It's not something I can make a decision on," Ashcroft answered.

The former AG of the US can't make a decision.
Speaks volumes doesn't it? Remember, this is the guy defeated in his home state, Missouri, by a DEAD MAN! Can I get a 'LOL'
