"Charlie Wilson's War" is that rare Hollywood commodity these days: a smart, sophisticated entertainment for grownups. Based on the late George Crile's sensational bestseller about how an unlikely trio of influential and colorful characters conspired to generate covert financial and weapons support for the Afghan Mujahideen to defeat the Russians in the 1980s -- and armed America's future enemies in the process -- Mike Nichols' film is snappy, amusing and ruefully ironic. But not even the stellar talent on both sides of the camera may be enough to make these qualities alluring to general audiences or those much under 40, making B.O. prospects a mid-range thing.

Nothing like a movie that glorifies Bin Laden. This movie is all about how we gave weapons to Bin Laden, and tries to cover up the historical nature and outcome of that action. This movie is perfect for seeing who the true bad guy is, America.

Sounds like adult material. 94 minutes though? I think the producers are counting on quick flow through to DVD. Guess they figure audiences would squirm in their seats were it more 'fleshed' out. Pity.
I'm waiting to see this one, and that 'Compass' flick. I said "Flick", therefore at once trendy and hip. My my.

It's exceedingly slick specious crap.

Julia Roberts did not bring the Soviet Union to its knees. Neither did Tom Hanks.

The crimes the film attributes to the Soviets were committed over and over again by our "friends" in Central America (there's a scene where Julia speaks of these thigs, her eyes getting all misty) who were trained by our own terorist Academy -- the "School For the Americas."

That's where the "contras" learned how to bayonet pregnant peasant women, rip thier bellies open and full the fetus out dripping the blood over them as they died in screaming agony.

Hey -- look it up!

Looks like Hollywood is hitting all the right notes on this one. How nice to see a movie with big time talent for thinking, mature adults.

Charlie Wilson is a larger than life Texas and American legend. Somehow this story escaped the attention it merited. But that will not be the case much longer.

As long as it's not "The Bonfire of the Vanities."

Has anyone considered the possibility that if we hadn't armed the mujahadin, the Russians might still be in Afghanistan -- and we wouldn't.

Papparazi are the scum of the Earth. There should be a way to outlaw their predatory behaviour. They disgust me almost as much as Bush. No morals, just money hungry.

i wish julia roberts would pop out another kid and go back to taking care of her spawn full time. i didn't even realize the annoying asshole was missing till she blew a head gasket chasing down the photographer who dared to take a picture of the self-loving twat picking up her spoiled brat.

Any film with writing by Aaron Sorkin has got to be good. I loved West Wing. The dialogue was so good and presented so well by the actors you could practically tap your foot to it. It was almost jazz. Throw in the element of Mike Nichols' direction and I can wait to see this one.
