Murtha

War proponents have seized on the words of Rep. John Murtha, D-PA, who said Thursday, following a visit to Iraq, that the troop surge is working - a seeming contradiction from earlier criticism.

But the congressman's statement was far more nuanced than what is being reported and echoes his previous statements praising the U.S. military's efforts.

Speaking via teleconference to reporters in four different cities, Murtha did acknowledge that the surge, which he had firmly criticized, has led to military successes. But he also warned repeatedly that the Iraqis were not doing enough to capitalize on those gains.

"I think the surge is working but that's only one element. It's working because of the increase in troops," he said, "but the thing that has to happen is that the Iraqis have to do this themselves..."

(The caveat was all but ignored by some conservative critics, one of whom described Murtha's claim as the equivalent of "hell freezing over.")

Since expressing skepticism over the war in November 2005, Murtha has consistently applauded the capabilities of the troops but also emphasized that, in the absence of political progress among the Iraqi government, their work would be for naught. When President Bush rolled out his surge proposal in the winter of 2007, he opposed the idea, according to the Wall Street Journal, because "it meant depleting readiness at home or extending the tours of troops [currently] in the war zone."

On Thursday, the congressman took a softer but similar stance. Murtha harped on the lack of political and diplomatic progress in Iraq. "The impression I got was that the central government was pretty close to dysfunctional," he said. "They hope the 2008 budget will be passed by 2007 but there are still 17 ministerial seats unfilled."

And he spoke worrisomely about the status of America's armed forces: "I keep stressing we can no longer afford to spend 14 billion a month on the war and let our readiness slip in other parts of the country."

Murtha also offered several more defined criticisms of the Bush administration's war policy. He discussed the violence caused by private contractors. "They are out of control," said the congressman. "There are more of them than there are troops." And he criticized America's military equipment shortage, noting that troops were leasing heavy-lift helicopters from Russia because the domestic crop had either worn down or weren't readily available.

What Murtha's press conference - and the reaction to it - did illustrate was how much of a delicate issue Iraq has become for the Democratic Party. With the levels of violence dropping, opponents of the war have been under pressure to alter their criticisms of President Bush's strategy. The outcome, some observers predict, is playing into the president 's hands.

"While you had very well intentioned and focused people like Congressman Murtha committed to getting the troops out, the Democratic Party as a whole could have won a number of these battles and didn't," Steve Clemons, a fellow at the New America Foundation, told the Huffington Post. "The [Democrats] seem to have been drawn into a fog by President Bush to neglect the larger strategic question and to allow the seduction of the American public into thinking things are improving."

And indeed, during his conference yesterday, Murtha raised the prospect that Democratic leadership could compromise on Iraq war funding (which is currently at an impasse) by extending the time-line for withdrawing troops. Such a move seemed out of the question when he and House appropriations chairman David Obey (D-WI) address the issue only a week ago.

"Congress wants to come up with a agreement," Murtha said on Thursday.

Yet even in opening up the possibility for legislative compromise, the congressman remained convinced that the soldiers in Iraq would best be served returning home. Asked about Sen. John McCain's claim that the troops simply wanted more time to complete the mission, Murtha offered:

"I think that's true. But on the other hand they want to come home. They came up to me and said how much they appreciate what the Congress has done to make sure they had what they need... Sure they want to finish the job, they feel morally responsible I think having said that they are burned out for having been there so often."

This blog shows why HP is a force in the MSM; it is called analysis. The analysis is well done & thought provoking. That goes for some of the comments too.

The surge proved most people were right, that no amount of additional military forces will move disparate Iraqi factions to govern together. In fact the GW Bush / Maliki understanding comes to that conclusion, saying that the U.S. should remain indefinitely in Iraq as the Colonial ruler. Who will be the new Viceroy?

I usually don't "do" these type discussion boards; they tend to follow a pattern - a couple of issues, followed by a display if hate filled diatribes - The "left" attacks the issues, the "right" attacks the "left".
The Marine on this page got my attention and the "response" drew my reaction.
Listen up , people. Most of us know we're stewing in an unprecidented depth of bullshit, all around.
My humble advice is for those who recognize the situation to ignore the loud mouths who claim "you" are the problem. You'll never convince them or change them and it just screws up your head. Frankly, you don't need their approval, or anything else from them.
The outcome of this mess we're in is going to be ugly. history has shown time and again what happens to Emoires who breed the arrogance and selfihness we call "political policy" - and we're on the verge of the same accounting that the world gave to germany in 1945.
Prepare yourselves for that - forget the fools; they'll "catch on" when reality sets in - as it must.
Find someone to love, get to know your God, and hold on to your ass - this is bigger than anybody in Washington - it's almost Biblical.
Learn and speak the Truth - the rest is beyond our control at this point; the corruption has gutted any hope for "winning" or "overcoming"-
Basically, come to accept that a cleanising is in order; it's as natural as the seasons.
Arrogance and selfishness are only cured by the humility of being forced to your knees; figuratively and literally.

The only real success for the Bush regime's strategy I've noticed is that the media has stopped reporting on troop deaths in Iraq. To my knowledge, 38 were killed last month but you wouldn't know it because the press hasn't reported it. US troops are still dying at an unacceptable rate.

Earmark John told the truth--but quickly had a change of heart and mind. Not surprising.

Unless you guys haven't noticed, there's a new sheriff in town and his name is Robert Gates. Gates apparently has Carte Blanche to run the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Gone are the days of Cheney micro-managing the war. The current state of the Iraqi war underlines the GROSS INCOMPETENCE of the neocon crowd that was in charge of the war for 5 years. This is another reminder that Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz/Feith were, and still are, the stupidest people ever to walk the face of the earth.

Yet despite Gate's success this is the best that he can do, a stand off. Without political reconciliation of the Sunni's, Shia, and Kurds, U.S. occupation of Iraq will not end. The misery of the Iraqi people will continue. The U.S. taxpayers will continue to shoulder the cost of the IRAQI FAILURE.

Whats really occured during the Surge:

Per Ware on CNN:

We have now put on our P/R 75K Sunni Insurgents and another 40K on part time pay and armed them. They are not part of the Iraqi government forces. They are a miltia force.

In otherwords we have created, mobilized a Sunni Militia to kick out the Al Qeada that was never there until we invaded and who over 60% come from Saudi, are allies who funded 911 and from where 16 of the 19 hijackers came from.

The new U.S. backed armed Sunni Militia stated that now that they are done with Al Qeada, they are going after the Shite lead Government.

We created a pause... Of course the Iranian led Shites control the entire souther part of Iraq. The Kurds want to form Kurtistan, Turkey invaded Northern Iraq today. The Taliban controls 2 provinces in Pakistan, and half of Afganistan. Pakistan is near collapse. Russia's PUTKin government is anti american and now have youth brain washing camps. China who makes everything we use and is our banker has vowed to go off dollars, and has not let 9 of our Navy ships into Hong Kong for approved visits, charges 22.5% tarrifs on what we export to them and requires a 50% interest in U.S. subs operating there.

But the surge is working. The dollar is worth half of what it was in 2003 before we invaded and ran up 5 trillion in debt. Haliburton has moved to Dubai after stealing vast amounts of our treasury.

In the 80s Russia invaded Afganistan at the urging of secular government within, to put down radical Islam on their border. We supported the insurgents against the Russians,, causing the death of tens of thousands of Russians. This is very similiar to Iran support of factions against us, excempt at least its on their border and not 8K miles away and the deaths caused by them so far is minor incomparrison.

The Insurgents we supported against Russia, became the taliban/Al Qeada... how has that turned out?

Regards

What Murtha really said, Nancy, I'm sorry. I know a screwed up and got off message with my statements about the surge working. It's what a saw and I was just telling the truth. Yes, I am aware the Republicans will use my words against all of us in the next election, ok. We can fix this. Yes, that sounds good, I'll get the reporters together and make a statement that gets us back on message. I'll talk about all the unfinished political goals and tone down the military successes. Nancy again, I'm sorry. But when I saw what I did it did look like the surge is working and that got me off message. I'll fix it.

Hang in there Dems. You are doing the right thing by withholding funds. It's way past time to pull the plug on bush's misadventure.
