If Romney wanted to get the independent and conservative vote, stumping from a Bush library is the last place to use a podium.
This is a bad move for him. He's giving credence to the cat calls regarding his religion, and he's going to shift the focus to his affiliation instead of his agenda and that of his opponents.
The only thing Romney should say regarding religion is to cite the Founding Fathers as epitomized in Article VI, which states: "...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
He's making his Mormonism the issue, which is an injustice to the voting public being it detracts from more substantive issues.
It's disgusting that some of his opponents have raised the issue and that he feels the need to explain his religion to anybody.
Mo Udall, candidate in 1968, Mormon.
George Romney, candidate in 1972, Mormon.
(Forgive me if the years are off.)
The issue of their religious affiliation was never raised.
By the way, Harry Reid is a Mormon.
In preparation, Mitt will be studying old tapes of Dick Nixons' "Checkers' speech. Dick perfected the art of looking into a tv camera and lying with impunity. In Mitt's case, he'll use that "feign sincerity" thing he does so well, and the old standby:"a-persons-religion-should-not-be-an-issue-in-this-campaign" bullshit. I just want to hear about the magic drawers and Jesus hanging with the Indians.
The Romney campaign's attempt to re-write history to imply that mormons were persecuted for their religious beliefs is ridiculus. The facts show that the primary cause of anti-mormon sentiment was because they set up their own banking system, printed worthless currency, and bought real estate in Ohio, Michigan, and Missouri (the mormon promised land) with the phony cash. This crime angered the landowners who were cheated out of their property and they drove the mormons out.
From Church News:
In 1836 the Kirkland Safety Society Bank was formed. Orson Hyde was sent to the legislature to try to secure a charter and Oliver Cowdery was sent to secure printing plates for the bank. The charter was denied, so the bank reorganized as an anti-bank or quasi banking organization in 1837. Joseph Smith used boxes full of rocks with a layer of coins on top to show the bank assets in order to get people to deposit money. In reality most of the assets of the Mormon Church and the members was in land.
At that time there was a great deal of land speculation in Ohio, Michigan and Missouri. This drove the land prices from around $7.00 per acre to around $44.00 per acre. Joseph Smith used the money that the bank did have to speculate further. By 1839 the price of land fell to the $17.00-$18.00 per acre. The bank and the Church had invested $60,000 in land and no longer had funds to cover its obligations. Oliver Cowdery was the Vice President of the anti-bank and signed most of the bank notes. Joseph Smith made himself cashier rather than an officer.
Voters need to understand that the fundamental belief of the LDS religion is based on the allegation that resurrected Jesus came to North America in the 7th century to find and preach to two tribes of Jews. Edited from Wikipedia:
"According to The Book of Mormon, the family of Lehiand Zoram traveled from the Middle East circa 600 B.C. to the Americas by boat. Nephi (Lehi’s fourth son) overheard that his brothers were plotting to kill him, so Nephi and his followers left and went into the wilderness. The followers of Nephi called themselves Nephites. The followers of Laman (Lehi’s oldest son) were called Lamanites.
Following the American visitation of the resurrected Jesus Christ the Nephites became the Mormons because they accepted the teachings of Jesus. However the Lamanites rejected Jesus so God marked the Lamanites with a darker skin color to identify them and their state of wickedness."
There has never been any creditable DNA or archeolgical evidence uncovered that substantiates any of part of this story.
America is currently experiencing the effects of an administration that gives access to large groups of people with fringe religious beliefs. Enough is enough.
Hey Huff Post, nice ENORMOUS picture of Romney! And way to pump this non-story for a couple of days. I used to think you supported liberals or Democrats... But of course I can't recall when you promoted one of them like this..
There are more important issues with Mitt Romney's character than his religion. I wouldn't vote for this SOB under any circumstances. I lived in Michigan when his father ran the state and he was a disaster for the common man.
THIS i gotta hear-
will he tell the country how jesus came to america ?
or about how john smith looked into a hat and wrote out their bible ?
or will he tell us about the holy underwear ??
i doubt he'll go into detail in this speach
Hope he remembers not to begin the speech with "My name is John Kennedy and I am running for President of the United States".
Romney is just going to blow more smoke up our collectives asses.
1. Mormon church outlawed the religious freedom to have more than one wife so they could become a state.
2. Under national political pressure, they finally allowed blacks to hold the priesthood.
These are just two examples that contradict what Romney is going to say he and his religion stand for. Conveniently, they now say giving up polygamy and giving priesthood were revelations from god. Looks more like god is susceptible to blackmail or political expediency to me.
For more, look up the definition of a cult. That explains his religion more correctly than he is going to.
Our constitution requires NO litmus test on religion to run for office - in fact it speaks against it.
We are paying for the Bush/Rove strategy of getting the evangelicals out of their pews and into the voting booth. Rove uses religion for political gain. It's time Americans of faith and not, woke up and said enough is enough.
This simply has gone too far. I'm not a Romney supporter but I am a supporter of our constitution. Before long the religious nuts in this country will be putting people on trial for using biblical names for their teddy bears.
Romney was stumping at a town hall meeting on C-SPAN yesterday. The guy's tighter than a frog's pussy. I do believe he still thinks we live in the Stone Age.
I want to say that Romney, nor any other politician, should not need to address his religion in the context of a political contest. I personally don't care if he drinks chicken blood, as long as he doesn't require anyone else to. We have a fundamental separation of church and state. That being said, it's better to know where people stand or else we end up with religion controlling policy, as in family planning controls, faith-based initiatives, etc.
Romney was asked at the last debate whether he thought the Bible is the word of God. He said yes unequivocably. Now I'm waiting for someone to ask him during a debate whether he believes the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Now that would be an interesting question and it would be fun to see his response. Think anyone will do it?
