OK folks, here is the problem and why this is not like JFK.
In the LDS (Mormon) temple, one of the oaths is to use all time, talents and everything you are given to further the church. I'm paraphrasing but I know this because I was a Mormon for 40 years before I left.
I took my temple oaths seriously at the time. I want to know if Mitt realizes that he will be breaking his oaths made "to the Lord" in the temple if he becomes President. Just how seriously does he take those oaths and covenants? We don't really know.
Either he will keep the oath to the people he represents in an elected office to put them first or he will keep the oath he made to the church and God to put the interests of the church first. Believe me, the interests of this country are NOT the same interests of his church (if he thinks so, he is delusional) so he cannot keep his promise to both.
There are other oaths in the temple that bother me, but this should be enough to let people know this is a bit different than what JFK faced. Mitt made a promise to God to use all his talents to further the church. Period. Will he break his oath to God?
Never mind all Mormons are taught to "follow the prophet" who at this time is a drooling old man who buys malls (Mormonism is about money) and worries about telling everyone how many holes they can have in their ears.
Remember Mitt pays 10% of his financial gain to the Mormon church as one of the requirements to enter the Mormon temple.
Folks, as a devoted former Mormon, I suspect what we will witness when Mitt speaks is the Mormon tendency to "lie for the Lord." He will say there is no conflict. Be aware.
Oh come on! He should drop out because his name is Willard!
Good. As a Mormon myself, I'm hoping then he'll say that torture is not part of the religion, nor is illegal search and seizure - so he'll be disbanding Guantanamo if he takes office.
And since a central tenant of the faith is the help the poor, the sick, and the needy, like every other Christian religion, he's going to focus on those things during his administration.
Wait - I just saw pigs flying outside. Must be dreaming.
If you happen to have Christopher Hitchens's book "God Is Not Great," check out his discussion of Mormonism, which begins on page 161. He discusses Joseph Smith's numerous money-making scams and conviction for fraud prior to his starting the Mormon religion, and his basing the religion on Islam (!).
Here is one quote:
"[The Mormon church] was founded by a gifted opportunist who, despite couching his text in openly plagiarized Christian terms, announced that 'I shall be to this generation a new Muhammed' and adopted as his fighting slogan the words, which he thought he had learned from Islam, 'Either the Al-Koran or the sword.'"
Surely we do not want a president who is so suggestible and uncritical as to buy into this shuckster's scam.
Oh good!
Perhaps we'll find out about the magical underwear, Marriott's Pay Per View Porn business, why he won't admit he's part of the hierarchy, and perhaps...just perhaps...why there is a disproportionate number of Mormons in the CIA than any other faith....maybe....perhaps....
Without having heard Mitt's speech about how "religious liberty is a fundamental part of our nation's greatness," it is obvious to me that I have the liberty to not to vote for someone who is exercising his religious liberty in a way that I find specious and absurd. That would not be the candidate for me, thankyouverymuch! I am making a value judgment, yes.
Unless he plans on renouncing his Mormonism, I don't see how this can help him even a little bit; discussing it gives the topic more prominence than it has now, and even that little bit is killing Romney's candidacy in Iowa, if not elsewhere.
I guarantee Huckabee is scarier than any Mormon.
somebody is quoted as saying-he should give a JFK speech about religion--he is no JFK and should drop out of any race--he is just a phoney!!!
Oh! Goody. He's finally going to admit that Mormons eat babies - just what the fundies have been saying all along, and that's the reason why Huckabee is now ahead in Iowa.
