Senator Biden is correct again. The immigration debates of today completely ignore the history of immigration and of migration - during the dust bowl of the depression era California did not want Okies and Kansas to migrate there. Biden is right that we should keep a human face on these problems.

Washington, DC " Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) issued the following statement today after the release of the National Intelligence Estimate:

"The conclusions of the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran's nuclear intentions and capabilities are, figuratively speaking, explosive. Iran stopped its weapons-related work in 2003. And while it has resumed work on uranium enrichment, it is still at least several years away from producing the fissile material it would need for a nuclear weapon.

"This means that the international community has a significant window of opportunity in which to act to avoid the stark choice between going to war or accepting a nuclear Iran. But the Bush Administration has long lacked a comprehensive strategy to take advantage of this window. Instead of continuing its obsession with regime change and irresponsible talk of "World War III," we need a policy that focuses on conduct change. The NIE makes clear that the right combination of pressure and positive incentives could "prompt Tehran to extend the current halt to its nuclear weapons program."

"Working with our allies and partners, not acting alone, we must make it very clear to Iran what it risks in terms of isolation if it continues to defy the international community's demand that it stop enriching uranium. But we also have to be just as clear about what it stands to gain " in terms of economic benefits, security guarantees, integration into the region and diplomatic relations " if it does the right thing. We should communicate this in direct talks with Iran."

Joe Biden's position on immigration is basically that the problem begins with Mexico whihc is the 2nd wealthiest country in the Western Hemipshere other than the US. Mexico is the 6th largest producer of oil in the world, yet it's people are some of the poorest. The problem is the economic distribution of wealth, only a handful of people have the wealth leaving 99% of the population in poverty. This is why the people will risk life to come to the US, work jobs other people in the US won't do, for unjust wages and no benefits. It is better than starving in Mexico. The problem for the United States will not end until Mexico has a system of just economic distribution of that nation's wealth. Until then, nothing the US can do, walls, fences, etc will stop these people from coming into ours. Unless their standard of living is raised to become EQUAL with the standard of living of US citizen, then they will remain in Mexico. This is the first phase of fixing the problem which would happen through negotiations with the government of Mexico. We can put economic pressure on Mexico to change.

Then you can look at the people in the US, and if working conditions are improved in Mexico, many might just leave. But, we cannot solve the problem until we stop the bleeding. No one else of the other candidates have looked at immigration in such depth and as a win win - win for the peoples of Mexico and Mexican descent, and win the people of the US.

Others use the language of hate and bigotry, and thank God, Biden uses the language of compassion and calls racism, racism. He tells it like it is.

The latest Gallup and Zogby polls show Biden getting 2% of the Democratic vote. I think he just lost half of that amount with his his latest foot in mouth gaffe.Maybe he can try for zero percent.

The dems should adopt a policy something like this: We're for securing the borders, sanctioning employers who hire illegal immigrants, and in regularizing the undocumented people who have deep roots in this country. The end.

Biden has always interested me, but I can't get out of my mind that he spearheaded the punative bankruptcy bill in 2005 (championed by the credit card companies) which made it harder for Americans to declare Chapter 7 protections, and he fought against amendments that would have lessed the impact of rapatious, mafia like usury charges by credit card companies (just in time for the subprime crisis hurting millions of Americans). MBNA is a Deleware company in Biden's state.

Joe can talk jive, but when it comes to protecting everyday folk, he's not all dat.

Day-um, Biden's going gangsta. This has some of the flava' of that remark made by Andrew Young back in the eighties about smart-ass white boys thinking they know everything. I like Joe. Always have.
