Via Matt Yglesias and Steve Benen, we are directed to the Baltimore Sun and a recent press release from the Clinton campaign, which, in hitting back at Obama's remark that he had not been "planning to run for President for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for," goes so far as to dredge up writings of Obama's that date back to...well...seriously -- you better just read it for yourself.

In third grade, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want To Be a President.' His third grade teacher: Fermina Katarina Sinaga "asked her class to write an essay titled 'My dream: What I want to be in the future.' Senator Obama wrote 'I want to be a President,' she said." [The Los Angeles Times, 3/15/07]

In kindergarten, Senator Obama wrote an essay titled 'I Want to Become President.' "Iis Darmawan, 63, Senator Obama's kindergarten teacher, remembers him as an exceptionally tall and curly haired child who quickly picked up the local language and had sharp math skills. He wrote an essay titled, 'I Want To Become President,' the teacher said." [AP, 1/25/07 ]

That's right. Essays written in the kindergarten and the third grade, which are sure to one day find a permanent home at the National Archives, are being cited by the Clinton campaign as proof that Obama's bloodthirsty presidential ambitions began as a plot hatched between naptime and snack. "If only the many, many people who want to vote for him in Iowa knew," reasons the Clinton campaign.

Mind you, this press release so ably proves its point with three preceding citations that it makes including the stuff Obama wrote back when he was eight years old seem...well -- totally nuthouse insane!

It's not clear what his elementary school essays say about the Obama presidency, but this information speaks volumes about the Clinton camp. Get in their way, and they will go to the ends of the earth to straight MESS YOU UP.

I know many people at kindergarden and elementary years wanting to be somebody.

My close friend wanted to be a diploma.

My next close friend wanted to be a scientist.

My next next close friend wanted to be a president in where I came from.

My next next next close friend wanted to be a Ms. Universal.

The list can go on and on and on.

So what if Obama wanted to be a president when he was in kindergarden.

We all had our dreams when we were little.

Thank God Obama's kindergarden dream is so close to become reality (not like ours), so I may have a president of my choice.

Ignoring Hillary's desperation and moving on for a moment:

A Case for Al Gore as Vice President in 2008

Now that the Presidency is no longer an option, there's an even better. Vice President.

He could focus on the one issue that he wants to with all the power of the Presidency and none of the obligations or headaches. He wouldn't have to suffer the direct attacks that a Pres. candidate get. He'd lose none of his prestige.

Once in office, any time he spoke he would speak with the authority of a President.

The best candidate for him to run with is Obama. Obama is surging ahead in Iowa and is the candidate of "change." Hillary and the others are "old news." If he runs with Obama, all the hand-wringing over Obama and "experience" would disappear instantly because Gore would be Obama's #1 advisor. Obama/Gore would be be unstoppable for the nomination and would win in the biggest landslide ever.

Gore would have 8 years to work full-time, full-tilt to repair the environment. He would have the direct ear of the President and no other distractions. This seems even better than being President.

Gore is in a powerful enough position now that he could make the deal. He doesn't really need it. He can say "I'll boost your ticket and carry us to the White House, but once in office my top priority will be the environment. I'll give you advice on other matters when you need it, but you're the President, don't expect me to get involved on a daily basis in anything not related to global warming. You deal with that other stuff."

If he wanted to, the Presidency would be Gore's for the taking after Obama's 8 years were up. Seems like win-win-win (Obama-Gore-us).

If you agree, please support and spread this idea. And somebody get it to Al Gore. It's not too late for him to make an even bigger difference.

Does Mrs. Clinton or any of her goons realize how pathetic this latest attack sounds to ordinary people? I doubt it as their strength has never been their intelligence.

I guess Obama was in pre-kindergarten preparing for his 2008 run at the same time Hillary was a Goldwater Girl.

What's with her lately? Weird.

I always wondered why we were threatened with something being placed on our "permanent record".

If Barack Obama wrote an essay in kindegarten (while I was mastering how to print my name in such a way that all of the letters faced the right direction), I will vote for him with an extra sense of enthusiasm.

God Bless him for writing this and for reaching his childhood dream :)

Barack Obama you are amazing you have overcome so much and we are so fortunate to have you as our next president.

Does anyone know where that straight jacket is we have a patient who has lost her patience?

The Clinton campaign reminds one of the Daleks, an alien force of attacking machines that would periodically show up on the British sci-fi series, "Dr. Who." Just before being beamed away in the nick of time by Dr. Who, the leader of the Daleks would whir excitedly around on its rubber tires waving its metal tentacles, screaming, "Exterminate, Exterminate!" It's as if the vast armature of the Clinton campaign came into existence not to summon the American people to a higher vision of the country's future, but for this moment, to try to stamp out whoever might jeopardize its procession to power. What a shame for them that it's in the nature of democratic elections to confound "the best laid plans of mice and men" (or women)...

Apparently humor escapes the Obama camp. That "attack" is hilareous. That anyone could take it seriously is remarkable indeed. It is rather amusing to watch those of you who do get your skirts in such a bundle! The Clinton camp Nees to take care not to aim over heads. My, my, such vituperative comments! Tsk, tsk.

Why not tell the story from the beginning

Obama has always wanted to be President even since kindergarten. He said "I have not been planning to run for president for however number of years some of the other candidates have been planning for.”

Immediately after joining the Senate, Sen. Obama started planning to run for President:

"'The first order of business for Obama's team was charting a course for his first two years in the Senate. The game plan was to send Obama into the 2007-2008 election cycle in the strongest form possible,' writes [David] Mendell in his forthcoming bio Obama: From Promise to Power...The final act of the plan was turning up the talk about a potential presidential bid, which was greatly aided by his positive press and suggestions by pundits that he run for president." [U.S. News and World Report, 6/19/07]
His law school classmates say that Sen. Obama has been planning presidential run for 'more than a decade':

“[A]ccording to those who know him, he has been talking about the presidency for more than a decade. ‘It was clear to me from the day I met him that he was thinking about politics,’ says Harvard Law School classmate Christine Spurell.” [Washington Post, 8/12/07]
15 years ago, Sen. Obama told his brother-in-law he was planning to run for president:

Sen. Obama’s brother-in-law, Craig [Robinson], pulled Sen. Obama aside [in 1992] and asked about his plans. "He said, 'I think I'd like to teach at some point in time, and maybe run for public office,' recalls Robinson, who assumed Obama meant he'd like to run for city alderman. ‘He said no -- at some point he'd like to run for the U.S. Senate. And then he said, 'Possibly even run for president at some point.' And I was like, 'Okay, but don't say that to my Aunt Gracie.' I was protecting him from saying something that might embarrass him." The ides was to show that he has ALWAYS, from the beginning, wanted to be President when he lied and said he had never wanted it.
