Daschle Calls Rove's Iraq War Accusation "A Joke"

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle today called Karl Rove's accusation that Congress rushed President Bush into the Iraq war, "a joke."

During an appearance on the Bill Press Show, Daschle mocked the idea that it was he, not the Bush administration, who deliberately accelerated the time frame for Congress to vote on the Iraq war resolution in the fall of 2002.

"Well, I was called last week a couple of times and I literally thought it was a joke," he said. "I thought somebody was trying to pull my leg. I can't believe that anybody would make such an outrageous statement. And I was interested in [the fact] that several of the former Bush high-level people have now disputed it as well... But, he's saying it and I guess he's trying to sell some books."

Daschle told Press that Congress in fact tried to stall the rush to war. But the President dismissed pleas for caution.

"I reminded the President that his father waited until after the election for the 1991 war," Daschle recounted. "It was a wise thing to do and allowed him to build consensus around the world and de-politicize it here at home. I turned to him and said that he ought to do the same thing. I wish you'd consider that. He looked at the Vice President... They smirked a little bit and then looked at me and said... 'Can't do that.'"

Daschle is just one of a litany of figures - both Democrat and Republican - who have publicly rebuked the former White House strategist.

During an interview last week with Charlie Rose, Rove argued that Congress rushed the Iraq War resolution before the elections in fall of 2002 despite the President's concern that the vote would be politicized. Since then, several congressional Democrats as well as former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer and former White House chief of staff, Andrew Card, have criticized the man known as Bush's brain.

"Karl is very smart," said Card. "He's -- sometimes his brain gets ahead of his mouth. And sometimes his mouth gets ahead of his brain."

And indeed, there is a preponderance of evidence to suggest that Rove is attempting to revise history. In a September 24, 2002, address from the White House (subsequently titled "President Urges Congress to Pass Iraq Resolution Promptly"), the President began:

Thanks for coming. We just had a very productive Cabinet meeting. We realize there's little time left in -- before the Senate and the House goes home, but we're optimistic a lot can get done before now and then. Congress must act now to pass a resolution, which will hold Saddam Hussein to account for a decade of defiance.

Senator Byrd said on the floor of the Senate, "Why the rush, Mr. President? Why the rush?" simply because he couldn't think of anything relevant to say, right? Yeah... right...

The reason Rove stepped down from his White House post was because he plans on being intimately involved in the coming election. Just watch.

This is why Daschle was such a terrible Senate Leader. He expected Bush to fight fair, and never learned how to play Rove's game. Rove wants to create a phony debate, and Daschle jumps in with both feet. Now Faux News can buzz about this for weeks and create a "he said/she said" scenario that pits Rove v. Daschle, when it really is Rove v. what everyone else in the world saw happen.

Rove, Bush's brain-drain, can single-handedly be credited with plumbing the giant "sucking-sound" of the GOP going down. He is an ersatz Iago to Shakespeare's Othello -- not purely evil, but complexly amoral, incapable of ordinary moral judgments and therefore Bush's worst possible advisor.

I too saw the emetic Rove on Charlie Rose and found myself running to the toilet as a vomitorium wasn't handy.

Moral of this tragedy: Elect leaders with more brains than drains and spare us the runoff. Rove proves, once again, what every psychiatrist and wise man knows: one cannot sustain indefinitely an alternate reality; collapse is inevitable; reality will, however eventually and always painfully, reassert itself and have its day.

Rove fantasized: "Congress pushed Bush to War in Iraq Prematurely."

Think about it:

At what age does a child acquire the ability of "Object Constancy"? You know, how a child closes his eyes and thinks you can't see him....and then he grows out of it -- normally.

Rove's statement is pre-mature, i.e., neurotically immature -- a pre-adolescent fixation. He screws up Descartes' "Cogito, ergo sum," mistranslating it as, "I think it, therefore it is."

Has anyone ever noticed how much Rove favors the evil Nazi guy in Raiders of the Lost Ark - the one who burned his hand on the medallion? This guy takes lying and evil to a new level. Can people not see the man as he really is? Maybe we deserve what we get because no one will speak out against the Bushies. Thank God some are now calling this Repug on the carpet. God help us all!

Bush Administration Intelligence is an oxi-moron.

Rove is to blame for so much in what has occurred over the past 7 years. He cannot now attempt to re-write the facts... the facts cannot be disputed. Only our perception of the facts produce various shades of the truth. Rove's truth is skewed to protect his legacy and attempt to prevent his indictment by shifting the blame.

Rove should be desiring peace and love. He should be using these to then know the answers to situations. It sure appears as if he has not used these as his guidelines. And, it appears as if the entire Bush Administration has also forgotten the meaning of those words. Or, maybe they never knew of them before, except to say to their family... "I love you.", which is a start.

Why should we strive to hurt others? What is in it for us if we kill and maim others?

Rove needs to be quiet and reflect on his life.

Rove is just trying to rewrite history. Now that he has left the WH, he has to rely on his own mouth, (not the Prez) to push his slanted views.

We can make all the fun of Rove we want to but he is who got us into much of what bush has done to damage us as a country and to have our soldiers die and be maimed across the middle east. All of what he has done has led us to having Bush be who he is today and we all are just a part of the manipulation this guy has done to destroy our reputation in the world while he laughed at us. If not for Rove would Bush bbbe in office? Now we look at those who still value him in the media. I refuse to but Newsweek now Charlie Rose is just another I add to the list of those who support him and his lies. Just because he was a white house liar he is still someone to listen to and those in media still shoving the lies down our throats should not longer be supported themselves.

Hilarious!

Rove has spun himself beyond the 'man we love to hate' to a pathetic tragic buffoon.

Without power, a perpetual liar has nothing to offer.

No one believes him.

Who cares what he says next?

In all seriousness, I do not think Karl Rove is capable of telling the truth.

The man has made a living through dirty tricks campaigns and not integrity, of which he has none.

The man should be shunned by even conservatives, whom I'm afraid thirst for power so badly, they will not.

Karl Rove looks like some creepy wax figure.

Rove probably wishes he would have been an adviser to Stalin or Mao where he would have been slowed by no laws and could re-write history at will.

I took the trouble to go back over CNN and Meet the Press media transcripts from 2002 and 2003 - specifically the role that Joe Biden and Chuck Hegal played on the foreign relations committee.

In July of 2002 - Joe Biden and Chuck Hegel began a Congressional Investigation of Bush's build up of 200,000 troops in the Middle East. In July of 2002, all Congress had were questions without the intelligence to support a war without doing an investigation. http://biden.senate.gov/newsroom/details.cfm?id=188293&&

In the Fall of 2002, Powell went before the UN with the "case for war" and the UN agreed to send in inspectors.

In October Congress passed the Bush Resolution to have war contingent upon the UN inspector's report as to whether Saddam had WMDs.

In January Bush in the State of the Union Address made the case for war not based upon the UN inspector's findings (which hadn't happened yet) but upon the CIA and British intelligence findings (bogus now - Plamegate)

In the beginning of March - two weeks before the war was to begin, it was common knowledge on the Hill that no WMDs existed although the UN inspections had not been done. Biden appeared on Chris Matthews who questioned him about this. Senator Kennedy and Kucinich made speeches saying there were no WMDs. Bush made public statements Iraq needed a regime change, and the reason for war was to get rid of Saddam. Biden made a public statement in the Washington Post and on Chris Matthews that if the reason for war was changing (the goal post was being moved) that Bush needed to go back the UN and negotiate a new UN resolution. Bush stated a new reason for going to war was to get rid of Saddam and to establish democracy in Iraq. France, the EU, Turkey, Egypt, dropped support of US. Bush declares we would go it alone. Two weeks later Bush bombs Iraq. Any hope of having a debate within Congress or the UN to stop the war was gone.
