Some mourned the athlete. Others mourned the classmate and neighbor. All mourned the hometown hero. Thousands were expected to follow a wake and vigil Sunday night with a massive funeral for slain NFL player Sean Taylor on Monday at Florida International University's Pharmed Arena.

Meanwhile, four young men charged with killing the Washington Redskins star safety sat in jail cells on the other side of the state.

RIP Mr. Taylor. A powerful life cut down way too early.

My God, the idiots truly do come out of the woodwork under circumstances like these.

Why not trust the words -- and tears -- of Taylor's Redskins coach Gregg Williams? This man, who has been around the block once or twice -- and who regarded Taylor as a son -- called Sean Taylor the greatest athlete he had ever coached.

Football is a violent sport. Like boxing, it is not made for everyone's sensibilities. But, by consensus, the man was truly gifted at what he did. And he certainly did not deserve to die in the shockingly brutal way that he did.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

There were lots of prayers at RFK Stadium yesterday but apparently no god to answer them (or if there was a god there he refused the request for a victory) as the Bills won without even scoring a touchdown.

For SupremeIdiot and NoContest: if it was Brett Farve who was shot and murdered in his home during a burglary, would you be so cynical, heartless and tacky? Or is it because he was black, young, and getting paid?

"Four men...sat safely in jail cells in another part of the state." What kind of a statement is that? Are we suggesting here that these criminals are safe from the law? Does anyone doubt they'll be prosecuted fully? Should accused killers be left out in public?

Let's keep Sean Taylor in perspective, folks. Nobody deserves to get shot in cold blood. But this guy kept a machete in his apartment! He led the NFL in penalties for violent hits. He carried a gun with him, and used it, until he was forbidden by law authorities from doing so. He was not, repeat not, a hero.

He's being treated like a fallen idol, and I for one don't get it.

This is ridiculous, unless you are a member of the family or knew the deceased peronally you have no reason to attend services. I just clicked on cnn and they are showing the service. I turned the t.v. off immediatly. How does the death of an athelete, no matter how talented, rate this much sympathy over any one else? Oh wait, this is america, we live for bread and circuses.

WOW! Thousands...for a football player.

2 weeks ago we buried a firefighter friend of mine. He was killed by a drunk driver. He left behind a wife and 3 kids.

400 of us firemen attended. No city councilpeople, no mayor, no thousands.

He wasn't famous or rich. He was a blue-collar guy who served his community, went to church and loved his wife and kids.

wow. thousands...for a football player. I'm so proud.
