Six televangelist ministries, under investigation by Iowa Republican senator Chuck Grassley, have until Thursday to submit their financial records to the Senate finance committee. The disclosures should cover the preachers' salaries, compensations, board oversight, and perks--from oceanside homes and expensive furniture to flights on private jets. Christian religious liberty and government oversight groups are watching with great interest, since state involvement in religious business affairs is atypical of past practice.

IRS rules for nonprofit organizations prevent pastors and other insiders from "excessive personal gain" through their tax-exempt work. But who determines what's excessive? And more importantly, are these preachers hot?

Giving too charities, tithing is not the problem, it is those who use this very moral christian value for personal gain that is the problem, truly it is worse what these televangelists do with their deceptions, twisting of religious doctrine too suit their "prosperity teachings", than a armed robber, since at least the armed robber is known for the crook he is, and no one is willingly with out duress giving too him/her, these crooks in the pulpit, not only are thieves just as evil as the armed robber, but twice as damaging since when exposed, many people loose faith in bible, god, jesus, and itis not bible, god, jesus but man who is the problem..., if these televangelist crooks were not only investigated, indicted and sent to prison just as Jim Bakker was it might help, but as anyone knows who watches television, Jim Bakker is back on television, usually late night, not near as powerful as he used too be, but he has no shame, he is back at his old games..., playing religion, conning the faithful for his own personal gain..., but one consolation is they may get away with it on this earth, but on judgment day, they will have all eternity too regret it..., jesus will surely not know them on judgment day..

The unscrupulous exploiting the well-meaning but gullible. There oughta be a law. Maybe they could call it the Constitution, or the Geneva Conventions, or the United Nations Charter. Naw, that would be too complicated. Maybe we could just get them to swear on a stack of Bibles that they are real Christians, and not just devils in Christians' robes. After that, maybe we could bring out the tar and feathers, before we send them back to Texas and Wyoming.

Rich Old White Men Wearing Expensive Suits

Rich old white men
wearing expensive suits
pontificating
on the evils
of liberals and gays
and single parent families
preaching about
the coming final battle
good versus evil
as if they wished
they could make it happen
a prerequisite
for the second coming of Jesus
in spite of all the people
who would be killed in the destruction

Rich old white men
wearing expensive suits
strut across the stage
yelling and waving their Bibles
putting the fear of God
in those who feel the need
to fear something
taking people"s money
to pad their lavish lifestyles
and to promote
their own brand of poison
they fund schools and missions
that obliterate and subvert
the true mission of their Savior
that every man woman and child
should be loved and honored
as if each one
was the Creator in person

Rich old white men
wearing expensive suits
never stood in a food line
slept on a sidewalk
filed for unemployment
they never wore a uniform
feared death in battle
lost a limb or a loved one
to a roadside bomb
or a sniper"s bullet
though their dollars
have often purchased
land mines and sniper"s bullets
they never picked cotton
cabbages or fruit
never swung a hammer for a paycheck
never sweated to make a mortgage payment
or worried about health care
But they will take
an old woman"s last dollar
let her think she"s saved
and tell her Jesus loves her
until she loses her home

Rich old white men
wearing expensive suits
are destroying my country
club people over the head
with their Bibles
use Old Testament Law
for a New Testament religion
that bombs medical clinics
and shoots doctors
invades hospices
trampling family"s grief
there is no New World
where we can escape them
seek refuge from persecution
like the Pilgrims of old
freedom of religion
freedom from religion
freedom of thought
freedom to live however we damn well please

Rich old white men
wearing expensive suits
we can only wait for them to die

I seem to recall a story from the gospels where Jesus threw the money-changers out of the Temple in what can only be described as a hissy fit.

If, as they believe, Jesus' second coming is immminent, I would be really careful about private jets, Bentleys and the like.

I think it's more like: Jesus is coming and boy, is he pissed. Look busy!!!

Mansions, private jets, Bentleys and haute couture should not be legal under tax exempt laws. Regardless of how these luxury items are paid for or by whom they are given, religious organizations that prostitute their tax exempt status in this way should have their tax exempt status taken away.

I firmly believe the televangelists of today whom helped elect the worst president in our history, George[6]Walker[6]Bushjr[6], will face on this earth, and on judgment day a terrible penalty for their evil selling of their souls for worldly possessions, they truly have sold their souls for worldly gain, and what in the end will it profit them..?

I remember the scandal of Jim & Tammy Bakker, my poor late grandmother used too give parts of her meager social security check too these rascals and criminals..., I see no remorse in either Jim Bakker who is on late night television again, selling his soul for his fake religious knowledge, his late ex-wife went onto do reality television, sadly these folks were predicted by "Jesus", false prophets will abound in the last days, many of these folks have decieved, people who truly wish too believe in god/jesus, and surely hades has a special hot spot for them, since they do not worship god, they sell a false prosperty religious belief, that jesus never preached, in fact he dispised the elite pharisee's and money changers who ran religion in his time, the parable of the rich man tells all anyone needs too know on this prospertiy televangelists, it will be as hard for a rich man too enter heaven as a camel going thru the eye of a needle, the rich man approached jesus, wanted too follow him, but when told too give up his riches too the poor, he grew sad, and could not do it, I watched Rev. Dollar being interviewed on CNN and he had the arrogance when asked would jesus if on earth today ride in a expensive automobile as he does, and he responded yes he would. jesus rode on a donkey, in his day and time a horse might have been considered the fancy vehicles of his time, so Rev. Dollar is a hypocrite, and truly if one plays with god and religion something terrible awaits one on this earth and if not on this earth in the after life..

I'm not really sure what being a Christian means? Everyone wanting to make a buck is a "Christian." The abuse of this term has made its meaning irrelevant. The church set has found religion now they actually need to find Jesus Christ. Memo to evangelicals its is not with these people.

My hobbies aren't tax-free.
Religion shouldn't be either.
That's just another form of entertainment.

Wow, a republican investigating the fundies? Apparently his life means nothing to him. He'll be burned at the stake.

I thought Jesus said give all your wealth to the poor if you want to follow me.

Not take it from them.
