Tractor trailers, tank recovery vehicles, crates of machine guns and rocket propelled grenades are just a sampling of more than $1 billion in unaccounted for military equipment and services provided to the Iraqi security forces, according to a new report issued today by the Pentagon Inspector General and obtained exclusively by the CBS News investigative unit. Auditors for the Inspector General reviewed equipment contracts totaling $643 million but could only find an audit trail for $83 million.

The report details a massive failure in government procurement revealing little accountability for the billions of dollars spent purchasing military hardware for the Iraqi security forces. For example, according to the report, the military could not account for 12,712 out of 13,508 weapons, including pistols, assault rifles, rocket propelled grenade launchers and machine guns.

Yeah, that was the plan to begin with. Lose some stuff so we can give our friends huge contracts to replace it.

How much will connected defense contractors get paid to replace all that missing equipment?

$20 billion? $30 billion?

Just have somebody check Cheney's garage and that over-sized POD in his driveway...

OR, maybe they're hiding it all in the FEMA trailers in Mississippi...No one would ever think to look there!

Lets not forget our demorats are now saying they are going to compromise and give Bush his war funds without demanding an end to the Iraq invasion.
So the war pigs are going to get even wealthier. Or to borrow from the title of one of Ariana's best books, but the war in Iraq is truly 'Pigs at the trough'.

This 'war on terror' is like a gift horse for military contractors and military manufactures as well as the major investors in this was , like the Carlyle group and Halliburton. US tax money goes in, and pure profit comes out. They love this war and everything about it. This is the biggest social program for the Industrial War Complex than just about any other time in recent history. And yes , all of us good, hard working, tax paying American citizens are paying to bill for them to make billions in profit. Talk about a scam of epic proportions

Damn CBS. They are anti-military, and always trying to present news to make the military look bad.

A patriotic organizations would have said that the auditors were able to account for 790 weapons, including pistols, assault rifles, rocket propelled grenade launchers and machine guns.

That's almost 6% of the total.

Well the evils doers need the stuff to kill Americans so GB can blame the Iranians and bomb them so the price of oil can go up to $200 a barrels and this benefits all of GB and Cheneys business partners.

You see this is all thought out.

first the $18 billion of 'reconstruction' money magically disappears then a billion of military equipment.

the insanity is quite amazing. Its makes me sick our troops are likely being killed by it.

Similar things happened in Vietnam and there was no accountability. Why should we expect things to be any different now? I would start by looking in Blackwater's play pen.

OVERSIGHT takes away from greedy profits!

What do you want, accountability or cash?

Missing? You can "lose" your keys; how do you "lose" tons of military equipment?
Now they want billions more in military spending? Sure...fine...whatever.
