A Senate Judiciary Committee vote on contempt resolutions against Karl Rove and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten were postponed following an objection by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). Under Judiciary Committe rules, the vote will be postponed for one week.

Rove and Bolten were subpoenaed as part of the committee's investigation into the firing of nine U.S. Attorneys last year. Citing executive privilege, President Bush has refused to allow top White House officials, including both current and former, from testifying before the House and Senate Judiciary committees, which have spent months looking into the firing of nine U.S. attorneys last year. The House Judiciary Committee has already approved criminal contempt resolutions against Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriett Miers for refusing to comply with its subpoenas, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has not yet set a floor vote on the measures.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy nut, and with the realization Bush has been spying on us, and that he controls the FBI and CIA, in one way or the other why couldn't he have found the "dead bodies", so to speak, in Nancy's closet? What possible excuse would she other wise have for ruining her place in history? As first woman speaker why fail to do what the people so clearly want, and fail so miserably?
Why not contempt charges, against them? Why not interfering with an investigation, something? Nancy's obvious fold here may be screaming a larger conspiracy.

specter's block of a contempt vote against rove and bolten is, itself, an act of shear contempt towards the rule of law and the american people

My fellow Pennsylvanian Arlen Specter (HA, he was born in the same town in Kansas as Bob Dole) has bamboozled the voters of Pennsylvania for so long. He's the biggest wolf in sheep's clothes. He's the type who presents himself as a moderate and independent, but when push comes to shove he is not a moderate but will, as covertly as possible, always assist in the implementation of party line policies.
The largest circulation daily in the state, The Philadelphia Inquirer, has always given him a free pass and has consistently helped to deflect any political heat away from him.
At a township function he attended last Spring,in his Q & A session, I asked him how far he would let the President go with executive privilege? I said the constant use of the concept should tell him something that bespeaks of secrecy for dubious purposes. He did a political soft shoe to dance away from my quetion.
Shame on Specter! He's well into his seventies and probably in his last term. He
could now act independent of party pressures if he wanted to be remembered as having some integrity. He could,if he chose, challenge Bush the way Wayne Morse and Ernest Gruening challenged LBJ on the Gulf of Tonkin incident. I won't hold my breath. Once a party hack always a party hack no matter the calculated appearance of being something other than what you really are.

The screwball can only block the vote for a week. Next week the vote will go to the senate floor. Hopefully between now and then those demoncrats we voted into office will develop spines.

What a pompous jerk. Those men need to be investigated. I guess we'll not be able to bring any of these jerks to justice until we throw them all out of office.

I've had Arlen Specter's number ever since he skewered Anita Hill and paved the way for Clarence Thomas to be on the Supreme Court. The worst part of his character is that I think he knows better, but continues to assist the forces of evil nevertheless. I don't know how he can look in the mirror.

Dems: the Senate is powerless to DO anything. The only power the dems have in the Senate, is the power to filibuster any new war funding.

The House has more then enough dems to start the impeachment.

Impeachment is the ONLY way to cut the the BushCo obstructionist crap.

Impeachment is the ONLY way forward.

Get over it.

The great Republican jurist in the U.S. Senate, Arlen Specter, has become just another disagreeable odor in the cloakroom.

While I'll admit HuffPo's headlines are often so tantalizing, it's impossible to bother reading the text or understanding the issue, that would be a mistake in this case.

Specter is 100% right on that this issue should not go to the Federal Court. A Federal Court ruling can effective codify these types of conversations as Executive Privelege and extend to much more gratuitous abuses. The potential damage of that to the Constitution is far greater than the joy of seeing Rove in cuffs.

I know it's easy to rabidly and viscerally hate anyone with an (R) after his/her name. I have great respect for Arlen Specter and I respect his even-keeled approach to holding back all of this Democratic political theater from doing greater harm.

Ah, see--that's the thing about Republicans in control. They'll band together to protect one another--and the nation's good be damned.
