Huckabee: Gay Marriage Would End Civilization

Forget terrorists. Mike Huckabee has identified a threat right here at home that would result in the downfall of our whole civilization.

GQ: Is the strategy shifting because social conservatives are losing on those core issues? Ten years ago, it would have been unimaginable to have gay marriage even in liberal Massachusetts. Now it's there.

Huckabee: I don't think the issue's about being against gay marriage. It's about being for traditional marriage and articulating the reason that's important. You have to have a basic family structure. There's never been a civilization that has rewritten what marriage and family means and survived. So there is a sense in which, you know, it's one thing to say if people want to live a different way, that's their business. But when you want to redefine what family means or what marriage means, then that's an issue that should require some serious and significant debate in the public square.

PERHAPS America could get on the moral high ground! Mitt and Huck could team up as Neo-Theo-Fascists. We could have sort of an American Taliban with emphasis placed upon Biblical, and Book of Mormon principles!

I would like to hear Huckabee discuss whether or not he approves of the Bible's eye-gouging policy to save traditional marriage.

Huckabee theatrics aside, he has obviously hit a nerve with the Revival Tent Republicans of Iowa where he just might win the caucus. Iowa was the state where a gay couple was able to sneak in a same sex marriage that the state has since refused to recognize. To these voters, their value system is under threat and Huckabee is their spokesperson.

The incendiary issue of same sex marriage was probably one of the issues that caused the Dems the 04 election even though all major candidates of both parties were and are still against it. There is some question whether gays are really demanding it too. In Massachusetts in 2004, there were 6200 same sex marriages. In 2005 the number dropped to 1900. For the two year period there were 8100 same sex marriages, of which 64% were for lesbian couples. Not exactly any great pent up demand even within the gay community.

Anyone expecting some magical kum-buy-ah moment of gays and evangelicals ever agreeing on this subject is seriously deluding themselves. And it isn't just the evangelical voters either. Some states passed constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage by 70-80% margins. And that's only been within the past couple of years. They're aren't that many Revival Tent Republicans in any state to do that.

Civil unions aren't a bad compromise either. And it may end up being the only deal on the table.

Huck needs to throw a fundraiser with Donnie McClurkin!
Huckabee's position on this is not much different from Obama's. Pandering to the religionist set at the expense of gay Americans is ugly from any candidate.
Will Obama's support from his McClurkin rallies switch to Huckabee now, or will Obama out do Huck for the gay hate vote? Seems they are both targeting the same mind set. Will they join forces? Will Sister Sister and Hezikaiah Walker now go chrip for Huck instead of Obama?
But seriously, what is the difference between Huckabee's pandering and Obama's? Perhaps a difference in degree, but certainly not in substance.

Memo to the Huckster: I live in Massachusetts, and its a pretty civilized place. Arguably legalizing gay marriage has made it even more so. Maybe gay marriage would end civilization as they know it in Arkansas, and maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Oh no, don't legalize same sex marriage. Imagine the tax advantages realized by that small fraction of Americans who would gain inheritance and Social Security benefits that they would otherwise miss. That small percentage is enough to provide the final flush for our economy that is currently floating in the toilet. Hey, if gays want to "F" up their lives like straights by getting married, I think they should have that right!

That was one of the best posts I have ever read. World Civ. was my favorite tenth grade class. I remember the very first day our teacher wrote on the board: "Live and learn, learn and live."

The fundamental truth of every culture that survives is the ability to adapt, to assimilate new ideas into a broader framework. Basically, to re-conceptualizing what is is.
