I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Hillary Clinton

Los Angeles Times:

On paper, they look an awful lot like Hillary Rodham Clinton. They are professional women of a certain age -- politically active Democrats, liberals, unabashed feminists who remember what it was like to be told they could not become firefighters or university department heads, let alone president of the United States of America.

They are women of accomplishment who have bumped up against glass ceilings, sometimes breaking them, while managing marriages, raising children and trying to make the world their version of a better place.

Will someone please try to understand that we (upscale liberal women) are trying to love Hillery. Here are my problems:

Health Care: We need a single payer system. Explain why we should pay the insurance companies (big contributors?).

Iraq war: I saw this mess coming from the beginning, why didn't Hillery and why isn't she doing something about it now?

Nafta: Why was this a good thing and how should it have turned out?

Hillery Clinton supported and pushed for a paper plant in New York (that had consistently lied about it's emmissions) to burn tires TIRES. This is someone I want in charge of the environment?

Let me make it clear that come election day I will hold my nose and vote for Hillery but I am afraid that I expect more of the same.

Her positions on the war is unforgivable in my opinion. Anyone who says they were for the war or after 4 years said with the information they have now would still go in, it absolutely off my short list

Interesting observations...Though I wonder if upwardly mobile white women are cognisant of recent history; as a byproduct of Clintonian economic policy, white women were one of the largest (group) benefactors. They became home owners wo/men being by their side: Nay minority women, but white women. That being said, now why do we assume that Hillary, Barrack, Edwards … etc. really makes a difference. Don't they all serve the same master. This is an election about nuances; all else are distractions. I think Naomi Wolf's new read is spot on.

Those republicans will come over to our side pretty soon. Hillary WILL be the next president.

Actually, I think what Arianna is saying is that SHE is a liberal, upscale woman, and she doesn't support Hillary. Gee, I know a lot of women in that category, and many support Hillary. Some have another favorite. But I have met none that wouldn't vote for her if she is eventually elected.

Of course, Arianna is an ex-Republican, and we know all about the knee-jerk reaction Republicans have against Hillary Clinton. Or against any woman who would *gasp* dare to run for President. Your roots are showing, Arianna.

Maybe just maybe these women have the good sense to look at Hilary's record and find that she is not a liberal. Nor does she truly believe in democracy or for that matter the Constitution.

She will rule in the same dictatorial way as Bush has. She will triangulate and her policies are barely left of center.

Give us a little credit.

Of course these women will support her against a Republican but many are hoping that they will not have to make such an awful choice.

Here I am- just one of the ladies described in this fine article-- Early on, I was a Hillary supporter-- but my Obameter eventually went in Barack's direction; now it looks like more and more of "us" will have our "Obameters" pointing towards his way. Why? Because she has not come up with anything new- and when she went towards 2 war resolutions with the bushies-- she lost our confidence--

My lack of support of HC is not based on economics or education. It is based on her failure at the one thing she was given to do as a presidential wife. The big HMOs paid millions for lying advertising to discredit her healthcare plan, and she didn't seem to even try to fight back. And now she is taking more political contributions from the same big health insurers whose lies killed her plan. WHY? And what does it mean to ordinary workers like my dad, who was a welder?

Besides that, she and BC both pushed NAFTA, and gave the lower-middle class the final whammy by forcing our workers to compete in the global labor market with workers in countries with government-sponsored heathcare. We are the only non-third world country that doesn't have a federally-sponsored healthcare program. No matter how hard our people work and no matter how many pay-cuts they take, employers will take the jobs to places where THEY will not be responsible for paying for workers' health care.

I have never heard either Clinton voice any regret for the mess they made in tandem-she with the healthcare failure and he with NAFTA. I would LOVE to hear what she intends to do--if elected president-- about the mess they made.

I vote for positions, not candidates. I don't care whether it's Hillary or whoever; what I care about is whether they're wiling to leave Iraq immediately, how they're planning to undo damage of the Reagan-Bush years on many fronts (education, health care, etc.), and how they plan to resist corporate power and do something for working people. I'll vote the candidate who has the greatest dedication and potential for accomplishing these goals.

"These so called upscale liberal women" who are resisting voting for Clinton are the minority. To many, Clinton is a capable, intelligent person who happens to be a woman. I am leaning towards her and wish her well in the Iowa caucuses.

She still has my vote, and my contributions. Oh, and by the way, I am an upscale, highly educated, liberal woman.
