Huckabee Wanted AIDS Quarantine

Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could "pose a dangerous public health risk."

As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.

When the Reverend Huckabee said this in 1992, it was already scientifically known that AIDS was not being spread by casual means. There was no catching it by the disease being airborne as is the case with other diseases that had quarantines. Mosquitoes couldn't help spread it. There were ways of containing AIDS and ways one could protect oneself without resorting to an isolating quarantine.

Huckabee's statement, which will probably play very well with his constituents, begs the follow up question: Does he still believe that AIDS patients should be quarantined even today? After all what has changed to cause him to change his mind? Nothing is different today than it was in 92.

Anyone expecting this to harm Huckabee in Iowa, or SCarolina is probably mistaken. The Republican Party has a real problem on their hands now. Since Huckabee is such a regional candidate, he has ZERO chance of winning the nomination. However the social conservatives will not be ignored. Huckabee will probably have to be the VeeP candidate.
