My impression is that Jason Linkins, and several of the posters here, know nothing about the Cuban Missile Crisis. He seems to think it has something to do with the Carter administration when he was seven years old.

Ms. Perino obviously didn't get the job because of her ability to see the events of the present day in a wider, more historical context. She got the job because she could get the message right, and deliver it with accuracy and predictability. Her superiors don't want her to know anything. They just want her to project an image that's advantageous to them.

So, please, Press Corps. Go easy on her. She's just an uneducated little thing who's trying to make a living being cute and schoolmarmish. That's her role, and that's who she is.

I don't see how just because Ms. Perino was eight at the time, she didn't later look back into the hostage crisis out of curiosity or interest. It has shaped our relationship with the Iranians for the last thirty years. How does someone willfully run away from all knowledge and information their entire lives? Bush has found a true kindred spirit in this banal press secretary.

Does democracy connote the freedom to choose to be uninformed or largely ignorant? It seems so.

I was 14 at the time of the crisis and also from Wyoming. I remember the drills very clearly. One had us run home as fast as we could as if that would have done any good as my home was Cheyenne surrounded by IBCM silos commanded from FE Warren AFB. I made it home fairly quickly but my mother asked, "Would you have been faster if the devil was right behind you?" My parents were scared!
