Like Dana Perino, I was seven years old during the Carter administration. And back then, I hardly had an encyclopedic knowledge of world history. Frankly, I don't now. But, I know a little bit, and one of the things I know is that if you were seven during the Carter administration, and are currently serving as White House Press Secretary, it should not be possible for you to tell the story Perino told on this weekend's episode of "Wait...Wait...Don't Tell Me" on NPR.

I had a situation the other day when they said President Putin said that our missile defense program was like the Cuban Missile Crisis. And so I got asked about the Cuban Missile Crisis and I was panicked a little bit because I really know nothing about the Cuban Missile Crisis...I came home and I asked my husband...wasn't that like, the Bay Of Pigs thing? And he said, "Oh, Dana."

Rarely is it asked, "Is our press secretary learning?" Probably because we don't want to know the answer.

I was just 8 years old, at the house of a childhood friend. He started up a discussion about nuclear war, and the possibility that one might happen soon. It was eerie because it was the first time I remember a serious subject of discussion. All previous conversations revolved around base ball cards, foot ball on his front lawn and neighborhood war games in his back yard.
It was a moment embedded in my memory to this day.
Now, those Neo-Confederates have brought the cold war back upon us.

Remember what Jay Rosen wrote about Scott McClellan. He was not there to communicate but to obscure what the admin was doing. Perino has that job now. She's talking to the thirty percent.

Is someone kidding me? We have a WH Press Secretary who doesn't know what the Cuban missile crisis was?

I mean, I give her credit for admitting her ignorance, rather than trying to bluff, but jeez...

I was 4 years old at the time but I learned all about it over the years.

What's HER excuse?
