I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Politico

The Politico has apparently unearthed some ancient questionnaire that Barack Obama may or may not have filled out detailing his "liberal positions" on a host of issues. The Politico seems to imagine that they've hit on something that will limit Obama's appeal with voters, but the only thing the piece reveals with any certainty is that Obama's views will limit his appeal with the people who write for The Politico.

As they indulge themselves in full-blown editorializing, here's how Allen and co-author Ben Smith describe "liberal" positions. They are positions that "haunt" and are "high minded" and "extreme." They are issues that are "small-bore, emotionally-charged and sometimes easily-distorted." They lead to statements that are "blunt" and will make Obama a "sitting duck."

And the candidate is described in unhinged, melodramatic terms. On the questionaire, Obama failed to use "the available space to calibrate his views." (This would be totally true, by the way, were it not for all the instances on the questionnaire where it was totally false, such as questions 3, 5, 10, 11, 14, 21, 22, 23, 26, 30, and 33. Did The Politico think that people wouldn't check?) The Politico's high wire treatment of this questionnaire continues:

"Do you support ... capital punishment?" one question asked.

"No," the 1996 Obama campaign typed, without explaining his answer in the space provided.

"Do you support state legislation to ... ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns?" asked one of the three dozen questions.

"Yes," was Obama's entire answer.

OMGs, y'all! That was his entire answer? Really, my whole concept of existence has been torn asunder!

And how can one possibly explain this sentence: "Campaign advisers say that Obama's positions reflect his willingness to remain true to his values, whatever the cost." Where does the notion of "cost" even come from? Surely that's not something the Obama camp said about this. One would have to guess that this little superfluous clause came from political sources opposed to Obama's presidential campaign. But then, it turns out you don't have to guess! Allen and Smith admit this:

The questionnaire, which was provided to Politico with assistance from political sources opposed to Obama's presidential campaign, raises questions of whether Obama can be painted as too liberal and whether he is insufficiently consistent.

How sad! These "questions" aren't even being genuinely raised by the authors of the piece! Allen and Smith are just someone else's glib Gunga Dins.

Really, the whole piece is just relentlessly dumb. There are pages and pages to this questionnaire, and the piece only mentions four of the questions, over and over. No allowance is made for the twelve intervening years that have passed in the interim. No allowance is made for the move from a statewide position to a Federal position. Any slight alteration in stance is treated as a dark and diabolical bit of subterfuge.

And for what? What's the cogent, big-picture analysis offered here? "As a result, Republican officials say that, depending on how Obama plays his cards, they will be able to torpedo him in a general election either as a flip-flopper or a lefty." Well, oh no! Who could have possibly seen that coming! Elsewhere, Obama's Republican opponents are said to be "licking their chops" in anticipation of attacking him. I guess that explains why, during the last GOP debate, when Obama was ahead in Iowa, his name was mentioned precisely zero times!

Even though it merely constitutes a tiny bit of pushback in an article that's largely the whispers of opposition consultants, David Axelrod's statement, "His views are very much in the mainstream of the Democratic Party," stands out simply because it's both reasonable and demonstrably true. If it weren't, the GOP would finally have a candidate available capable of "touching voters," wouldn't they?

The Politico has apparently unearthed some ancient questionnaire that Barack Obama may or may not have filled out detailing his "liberal positions" on a host of issues. The Politico seems to imagine ...

BIDEN: Per NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann, Biden becomes the last of the six Democratic campaigns playing in Iowa to go up on TV in the state. In the ad, Biden speaks directly into the camera and says, "Being president isn't the same thing as running for president. When this campaign is over, political slogans like 'Experience' and 'Change' will mean absolutely nothing. The next president has to act.” He then touts the bipartisan approval in the Senate of his Iraq plan and that he spoke with the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf before Bush did after Musharraf declared emergency rule earlier this year. “You don’t have to guess what I’ll do as president,” Biden says to close the ad. “Just look at what I’ve done.”

Obama is the last on my list. The reason is that he is out on the trail talking instead of in Washington LEADING the fight against the actions Bush is taking NOW.

Did anyone notice when Politico got started and that dweeb with the speech impediment was asked by Bush in a White House briefing aroung the time of the wiretapping leaks, "And who do you work for, Mike (I think his name is Allen) and he says, Politico.comm sir." (The dweeb's eyes actually sparkled when he said it.)

It was a total product placement.

Politico has to be an outlet for Newsweek, MSNBC and NBC (basically GE's propaganda machine) to inject poop into the political process without getting the parent companies hands dirty.

Plausable deniability.

"What, I didn't say anything, it was Mikey... he'll eat anything."

Right. How does that ad slogan go...

"GE, they bring big lies to life."

I don't understand how this is earth shaking news. anyone who knows anything about Obama knows he has always had liberal views. He doesn't try to portray himself as some centrist. His record is one of the most liberal. So, how is this shattering? In his speech he says flat out that democrats need to stop acting like republicans or worry about what the republicans will say or do. He's right. I have been so sick of democrats more worried about the republicans than who is the right candidate and who is the one who can lead. Obama doesn't pretend to be someone he's not. That;s Hillary's thing with her triangulation and playing both sides. Obama is proud of his progressives views and has never claimed to be anything else. So, again I wonder what the big deal is.

Yes, I'm shocked at such media bias, especially in light of the "Wacky Dennis Kucinich" posts rampant here.

This is a oppo piece from the Clinton campaign in which the Politico dutifully passed off as a legit story.
It is very obvious the Politico is push the Queen and they trip over themselves to explain away any embarrassments HRC may make while going after Obama and Edwards like the article you are highlighting.
The other night Ben Smith tried to tell people in his blog, and I'm sure with a very straight face that at the SC Rally with Oprah, when Obama came out the whole stadium died down and the cheering ceased. really. i'm sure Smith did not think that the campaign would post the video of the rally on their web site and he got trashed even by people who are not obama supporters.

Dear Politico,

According to every pundit poll since the beginning of 2008 election mankind, Edwards and Obama beat any Republican candidate, whose name is not McCain. In fact, Hillary is not only the most hated Democratic candidate to Republicans, but she's alienating half of her own party as well.

So, as amused as we are at your Clinton-fueled desire to try to find the 'other' Obama kindergarten paper, we also find you to be a pathetic and sorry excuse for a 'news' site.

Randi Rhodes of Air America fame must be out of interesting news today because here whole show is how she thinks Oprah wasnt being authentic when she started using a voice unlike her stage and public personna, ie it had a slight southern drawl while she was in Iowa... I say to Randi, GET OVER IT...this is hardly news and for you to be carrying on over this is down right petty... There are more important things to be discussed than whether or not some radio talk show host thinks Oprah is being authentic....Oprah is one fine human being.. We need more Oprah's...for one thing, at least she knows how to let her guest talk...

If this is the best Hillary's attack dogs can do . . . she may get her butt kicked. Pathetic . . . and transparent.

And where in the article does it mention Hillary Clinton? Is she responsible for every negative item about any other candidate? Let's get over the paranoia folks.

I saw a Politico editor on C-SPAN recently. I asked a question about Kucinich being excluded from the last Democratic debate. Does this editor realize that Kucinich had only eight minutes of speaking time in 2 hours? His response? Well, not everybody can have equal time? So obviously they don't want to do anything like actual reporting. Instead, just keep the political gravy train going so everybody makes money.

I will point Lanny Davis to this article. Hillary's supporters have clearly lost their fool minds (Taylor, Daou, now Davis). This is what happens when you support her.

Thank you. A voice of reason in the silliness.

Republicans have NO Shortage of creepy little moles to uncover all miniscule defects or flaws in any Progressive candidate. "Chinless, closeted, and creepy" seems to be the resume these putrid gang of dirt diggers, all have in common.
So maybe they had volumes of Clinton ammunition stock piled, don't think for a moment they can't retool for Obama or Edwards in a month.

Mike Allen is enamored with Mrs. Clinton and he fits in very well with their campaign style. The Clinton team is as dirty as any republicans you can find but is this what democrats really want?
