Huckabee And Aids Victims

AP :

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's 15-year-old comments that AIDS patients should have been isolated have so alarmed the mother of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life-ending battle with AIDS in the 1980s engrossed the nation, that she has asked for a meeting.

"I would be very willing to meet with them," the former Arkansas governor responded Tuesday while campaigning in western Iowa. "I would tell them we've come a long way in research, in treatment."

For anyone, gay or hetro, man or woman, who wants some insight into what really has surpassed being an "epidemic"..it's a "pandemic"...I found the link to an article I became familiar with years ago. It's a bit lengthy...but WELL WORTH the read.

It's titled "The Virus Cabcer Program 1964 - 1980 - The Birthplace of AIDS and The Kaposi's Sarcoma Epidemic"

Oh, and Muriel...this had nothing to do with Reagen..it goes back to Nixon and even Roosevelt during WW2

The Christians are like Norman Bates. They seem normal when you first meet them. But they hear "Mother" up in the attic, telling them what to do, and it's not good.

Jeanne White is an intelligent, brave woman. I hope she sets Huckabee straight. Maybe Huckabee needs to read up on the latest statistics on AIDS, since the largest increase in the spread of the disease is in heterosexual women. People are still ignorant enough to think that AIDS is a "gay" disease. It's pretty scary when it's a candidate for president.

Reagan did not need to "quarantine" gays when the AIDS outbreak occurred. Acknowledging the disease and providing funding for research would have been sufficient, instead of waiting years to even utter the word.

Republicans like Huckabee disgust and frighten me. The last person we need in the White House is a Baptist minister. Next thing you know, LGBT's will lose any ground in obtaining the equal rights (notice I did not say SPECIAL rights) that they deserve.

Don't bother talking to Huck about it Ms. White (assuming that is still your name).

Don't bother trying to teach pigs to sing,... it doesn't work and it annoys the pig as Sam Clemens would no doubt have told you.

Even if he did listen, his political mind is made up - he wouldn't change 'cause he would lose his base voters.

I do not and would never support the huckster, but I would be more concerned if this was his feeling now. We all have made ignorant comments, and his are being scrutinized because of his candidacy. I would need to see more current statements along these lines before I become truely alarmed.

have to agree , Huck cannot be.Not neccessarily becasue of his views of AIDs 15 years ago but because of his perceived baggage...The Dems are really just hoping that he will be the nominee . Somewhat the same that the Repubs want Hillary

If Reagan had quarantined Aids patients, would we have had an epidemic? Would Ryan White have caught Aids?

I am not an ignorant homophobe, as stated by a poster. I have had gay friends from kindergarten through late adulthood. If they pass disease through their habits, it isn't because I have repressed or rejeced them.

Millions in Africa now suffer because Reagan cared too little about Aids to quarantine Aids victims in America. Millions are orphans because Reagan didn't think homosexuals were worth saving then, wanted them to go out and spread it around and wipe themselves out.

Huckabee has better science on his side.

Tragic misunderstanding here.

She should ask him this. What would you do if you were HIV positive? Should you be put in quarantine(a detention camp)? Or because you think you're a superior white neocon you should put everybody else in one?

Mrs. White, better bring your hand sanitizer or he won't shake hands with you, the guy is another Right Wing Bible thumper who thinks because he can quote scripture he's the chosen one. Got news for him, if he wasn't up on aids ten years ago, I hardly think he's going to be up to date on the "information" now.

Everyone, including the President was very fearfull of AIDS and HIV 15 years ago. I remember taking an AIDS/HIV test every year in the military and going to 'scare' briefings thru-out that time period. Funny, how medical science and social responsibility have made us all 'enlightened'.

Huckabee's comments came nearly 10 years (!) after the AIDS disease was becoming known. His ignorance, his blatant homophobia, his irrational fear, expressed in 1992, have no place in current political discourse. For him not to retract his statement -- or at least a qualification that he made the statements out of ignorance of the nature of how AIDS and HIV are spread -- should be held up as an example not of why we shouldn't vote for him (there are plenty of other reasons why he's unsuitable to be president) but of what happens when people don't think, don't see beyond the surface, and judge too quickly. I give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows casual contact doesn't spread HIV, or that quarantining is not the answer to stop the spread of the disease. What really irks me is the opportunism he is employing to send a message to the Evil-gelical base of the GOP that he hates gays and all things homo.

If Huck had made this assinine statement back in the early 80's, when little information was available, it would be bad enough. Back the, we were all in the "mushroom program"...keep us in the dark and feed us shit"! The fact his statement was made on a questionaire when he was running for Senate back in 1992 leads me to believe this didn't get much media attention.

But this statement was made in 1992...research had been done and was available! Ryan White and his mother, Jeanne, were not only in the headlines, but they had taken their cause for funding all the way to Congress!!! Ryan White died in 1990; and this poor excuse of a human being (Huck) comes up with something this outrageous 2 years later?? Unexcuseable!!
Huck was running for Senate, and hadn't heard about the Congressional hearings??

You may joke around, and say if this is the best the GOP can offer; bring it on!! But the statements this moron has made lately...from gay marriage ending civilization, to he hadn't read the NIE repot (and Bush had it for 4 years and didn't read it); now standing by this 1992 statement...this man is not fit to run for office; and should be removed from the nominating process.

NO ONE WHO OUTRIGHT SLANDERS A GROUP OF CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RUN FOR OFFICE!!
