The Hollywood Wiretap:

The writers made a different kind of strike against AMPTP yesterday when a chink in the armor left the door wide open to anyone who knows anything about domain names. By purchasing the available www.AMPTP.com (the group's real address is www.AMPTP.org) and then proclaiming the "new economic partnership proposal...the single greatest document since the Magna Carta," the writers fooled a fair few folk. However, in blogland, some wonder whether the writers' satirical savvy has done more harm than good.

Nikki Finke posted the link saying she was getting a ton of puzzled emails from folks who weren't sure what was what. For her part, she wrote the site is "laugh-out-loud funny no matter what side of the issue you're on."

Later yesterday evening, when the WGA sent news of the site to its mailing list, David Poland, who agrees it's funny, wrote that the WGA's choice was "vaguely unsportsmanlike."

The WGA has approached these negotiations as if s a public referendum is scheduled and they're trolling for votes. There is no referendum scheduled and there will be no votes by anyone not sitting around the table. The wit and charm being displayed by WGA members on myriad blogs, postings and picket signs won't secure an equitable conclusion to this negotiation. In fact, it hardens the positions of the all too human combatants on both sides.
I support the troops in this battle but this ill-conceived war may well be prove the law of unintended consequences, it may destroy the business model it seeks to defend.

Absolutely worth a visit!

The logo page and the link to the "just for fun" site really made me laugh. (just for fun takes you to a "plushie" site which contains "resources of interest to Plushophiles, Zootaphiles, Toonophiles, Furries, Texturephiles, etc." The look and feel of the site will confuse a lot of people who will naturally look to the AMPTP.com as the "official" site.

It's mind boggling that the AMPTP didn't have the site locked up. We advise clients not to name their business until after they have the .com/.net/.org/.biz for their names in the bag. The .com address is the prime internet real estate and the fact that AMPTP turned down an offer to purchase it makes me no sense from a business perspective. They left themselves wide open to this kind of spoof and they deserve it.
