Just a day after Hillary Clinton's communication director declared that the campaign would not raise the issue of Barack Obama's acknowledged cocaine use, her New Hampshire co-chair, Billy Shaheen, warned that Republicans will capitalize on Obama's drug history if he wins the Democratic nomination.

"The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight," Shaheen told the Washington Post, "and one of the things they're certainly going to jump on is his drug use."

In the Washington Post interview published Dec. 12, Shaheen said Obama's own willingness to discuss his past drug use would "open the door" for the GOP: "It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'....There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe denounced Shaheen's comments: "Hillary Clinton said attacking other Democrats is the 'fun part' of this campaign, and now she's moved from Barack Obama's kindergarten years to his teenage years in an increasingly desperate effort to slow her slide in the polls. Senator Clinton's campaign is recycling old news that Barack Obama has been candid about in a book he wrote years ago, and he's talked about the lessons he's learned from these mistakes with young people all across the country."

An earlier Huffington Post article from Dec. 11 described secretive efforts by the Clinton campaign to promote the Obama-cocaine issue. In the HuffPost article, Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, contended that the campaign has not tried to make use of Obama's past cocaine use and that it would not attempt to do so in the future. "Candidates personal lives should not be a part of this campaign," Wolfson said.

Responding to Shaheen's comments, Wolfson said today, "These comments were not authorized or condoned by the campaign in any way."

Allies of the Clinton campaign had sent emails to reporters and Democratic activists with a link to an Iowa Independent story by Douglas Burns headlined "The Politics Of Obama's Past Cocaine Use."

Burns' article on Obama posed a question that Clinton has been unwilling to raise herself and that has received little attention during the Democratic primary battles: If Barack Obama becomes the nominee, will the GOP be able to turn his acknowledged cocaine use into a debilitating issue?

Burns cited two June polls, one by Scripps Howard, the other by the New York Times. Both found that strong majorities of respondents believe that voters would not be willing to support a presidential candidate who admitted cocaine use. "What will be fascinating to watch is whether Americans' views on cocaine will play out in the election booths as a defining factor or anything close to that. If it does, that could spell trouble for Obama," Burns wrote.

"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man," Obama wrote in his book Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. "The highs hadn't been about that, me trying to prove what a down brother I was. Not by then, anyway. I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory."

Elsewhere in the book Obama writes, "We were always playing on the white man's court . . . by the white man's rules . . . . If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher . . . wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had the power and you didn't. . . . The only thing you could choose was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage. And the final irony: should you refuse this defeat and lash out at your captors . . . they would have a name for that too. Paranoid. Militant. . . . Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it."

Sources pointed out that in 1992, Bill Clinton complained when President George H. W. Bush tried to capitalize on Clinton's marijuana use. The Los Angeles Times reported in Oct. 1992:

Bush broached the marijuana issue by questioning whether Clinton could be believed when he makes campaign promises. "This guy couldn't remember in detail that he didn't inhale 20 years ago, and he can't remember what came out of his mouth 20 minutes ago," the President said as he stumped for votes in Florida, a state critical to his reelection hopes. It was the first time Bush had so directly brought up a problem that dogged the Arkansas governor in the spring -- his acknowledgment that he had tried marijuana while studying at Oxford University in Britain, but that he had not inhaled. [...] Clinton, responding to the day's attacks on him, told a reporter that he felt "sorry" for Bush. "I think that that sort of demeaning talk doesn't do him any good and only shows the American people how desperate he is to hold onto his job," Clinton said as he attended a dinner in Washington, D.C.

Allegations of drug use have become increasingly common in recent elections, including charges, denied by George W. Bush, that he was arrested for cocaine possession in 1972.

Obama's experience as a Community Organizer is serving him well. Hillary is being put in a box. How does she slow his momentum without going negative and further alienating voters? Obama is changing the game in American Presidential politics. There will be lessons learned and applied for years to come from this historic campaign.

Here is what Joe Biden said today on 12-12-07 related to drug use for those who want a quick read http://www.allamericanpatriots.com/48738797_senator-biden-calls-increased-support-anti-drug-efforts

Chairman of Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Drugs Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) applauded the good news surrounding the decreased use rates of some illegal drugs among adolescents, but reiterated his previous calls for ongoing and comprehensive anti-drug education and treatment efforts to fight prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

"The Monitoring the Future Study is a firm reminder that drug use trends are constantly changing and must be attacked through a comprehensive effort to educate parents and teens, and to robustly fund prevention and treatment programs," said Sen. Biden, also Chair of the Caucus on International Narcotics Control. "It"s great news that the use of certain illegal drugs among teens has declined over the years, but as the Study recognized, the usage rates of many illegal and prescription and over-the-counter drugs is still alarming."

Monitoring the Future is annual survey of the behaviors, attitudes, and values of American adolescents. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Monitoring the Future Study surveys approximately 50,000 8th, 10th and 12th grade students each year on substance use levels and perceived risks and availability of various drugs including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, hallucinogens, and, recently, prescription and over-the-counter drugs."

PLEASE NOTE THAT SENATOR BIDEN HAS BEEN WORKING FOR 35 YEARS TO HELP STOP DRUG USE BY TEENAGERS IN AMERICA. PLEASE READ HIS ARTICLE - SO NO ONE MISTAKES OBAMA'S BEHAVIOR AS REPRESENTATIVE OF OTHER DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES WHO HAVE A COMPLETELY OPPOSITE RECORD IN FIGHTING THE WAR AGAINST DRUGS.

What nerve! Bill Clinton didn't have the courage to admit that he inhaled and now the Clintons are trying to harm Obama because Obama had the courage to be honest. If Obama wins Iowa and New Hampshire, he gets my vote. The Clintons must be desperate and must realize Hillary's campaign is gong down the toilet where it belongs.

Personally, I DON'T want a President who hasn't at least tried pot. Since the draconian drug laws could stand an update, I'd prefer it be by someone who has a clue. If the Hillary camp resorts to "swiftbonging" Obama it shows fear. Plus, like Bill really didn't inhale, puhleeze.

hillary is lucky she is now a democrat because if she were running as a republican and her opponents let it be know that she is well known to be a lesbian, it might hurt her chances to get elected. but on the other hand i think it only fair she announce it herself so people get the chance to decide if it matters to them. who thinks she will?

A few questions? Why does this blog attack Clinton, not daily, but almost hourly. It's almost an Obama site. Why is there soooo much hatred for Hillary, when gW bush is the one who has ruined the country? Why is it he, and Edwards can attack her but she cannot respond? Why is she held to a different accountability then any other candidate? Why do I never see critical pieces of any other candidate on this blog? I am a veteran, and I am black, but why don't we bother to ask ALL of the candidates about their views on issues? If you dislike her positions that's one thing, but why so much hate? I don't support Obama or Clinton but I dont hate either of them. I hate the Repubs and what they have done to this country but the way you people operate, I only expect more of the same in the future. This blog is really sad.

Why is this even a news story? Is there anything "new" here? Obama already wrote with great candor about using drugs 30 years ago as a TEENAGER, and how he realised once he got into college what a huge mistake he had made.

This is a non-story, and has already backfired against HRC's camp.

So, two nights running, this Edsel deceives you with his bogus headline.

Last night he bullshitted you about an attack that the Clinton campaign never made.

Now tonight he is characterizing as an "attack" a perfectly reasonable comment about the problems that Obama must overcome, should he gain the nomination (and better he than Clinton) and need to go up against the thugs.

Would everybody who thinks that the thugs plan an nice tea party ending in a Miss Congeniality contest please just now sign off and go to bed? Children need their sleep.

OK, now just for the adults, how does a perfectly factual statement like: "The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight, and one of the things they're certainly going to jump on is his drug use." amount to an attack?

How is that an attack? "Obama cannot be trusted because he is a black junkie" would be an attack.

What about this guy's comments do you dispute?

Who, now that the children have gone to bed to dream of the pony that Santa is bringing them, believes that the Thugs would not attack Obama on this?

Is there among any of you a professional political operative? A marketing maven?

People. This should make no difference whatsoever in Obama's campaign. This should have no effect whatever.

If Obama cannot look like Fred Astaire dancing on the Marble Bar while he makes this go away, he has no business being the nominee.

VASTLY better that this come to the attention of America during the primaries than during the General. Would anyone care to guess how many of the 120million voters in November know today that Obama did a bit of blow recreationally?

I say 2%, max. If 90% of America hears for the first time that the candidate did blow come late September, we are fucked.

Get it out now and it means nothing.

And this indignation about HRC refusing to run for Miss Congeniality? get real.

This is the most powerful office on the planet. Nice guys finish last.

If Hillary's internal polls show her coming in a long 2nd place to Obama or even 3rd, I would wouldn't be suprised if she abandoned Iowa and moved all her resources to New Hampshire. Fact is, she never should have run in Iowa in the first place. If she had kept with her initial plans of not running there, she would be able to claim that Iowa didn't matter when her husband ran, and it still doesn't matter to her now. She then would have been solid in New Hampshire. Too late now.

"There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks..."

Yea, Wolfson, and every day you use them, Hillary looks more like George Bush, and you look more and more like a wannabe Karl Rove.

Iowan's unite!

This tactic is meant to fool you, manipulate you, it's meant to make you submit to an AUTHORITARIAN RULE. You are the front line in the battle to free this great nation of TYRANTS who have only one goal: your eventual enslavement.

Rise up, Iowans!

Remember, the first flag of this nation was a snake, surrounded with the words, "Don't Tread On Me." You know in your collective consciousness what those words mean. They mean "Fuck with me at your own peril. Like a snake at your heals, if you step on my liberty, I WILL BITE YOU WITH ALL MY MIGHT!"

Take aim Iowans, at these merchants of freedom's death, and unleash your mighty fangs!

DEATH TO FASCISM! DEATH TO THE TRAITORS WHO HAVE SOLD OUT OUR PARTY!

WE ARE "E PLURIBUS UNIM" not statistics. We are the people. We are the power that can see through the lies, and see the truth.

We are not just the defenders of democracy,

WE THE PEOPLE ARE DEMOCRACY ITSELF.

Obama in Iowa on January 3, 2008, in New Hampshire on January 8, 2008, South Carolina, Nevada, and then it's everybody else.

But Iowa is first, so... FIRE IT UP! ARE YOU READY?

THE DREAM IS NOW.

I wouldn't even care about this if Hillary didn't always raise such a fuss about the "politics of personal destruction." She doesn't seem to stand on any principle at all. I guess any principle worth its salt just shakes her off before she can get a foothold.

Too bad Obama chose to get dirty and nasty in the campaign. I really used to like him until he started to attack her in the debates. If he had kept above the fray and focused on beating the Republican nominee, and let people vote for him if they came to like and want him he might have had a chance. Instead he saw the only way to have a chance was to go negative against Hilary. What did he expect her response would be? Rollover like Kerry did? Just think, a Hilary/Obama ticket would have been great, but not now. She will probably choose Dood or Biden.

There is a difference between INDULGENCE and ADDICTION!

I credit this to blogger reserch. Why did I not think of it!

Obama was obviously never addicted to cocaine otherwise he would have had to go to a rehab.

The last I checked he turned his life around. Hit the books, A student, President law review, Constitutional law Professor, State Senator, U.S Senator and soon to be President.

This would be another book in itself. Who would not be inspired?
