Just a day after Hillary Clinton's communication director declared that the campaign would not raise the issue of Barack Obama's acknowledged cocaine use, her New Hampshire co-chair, Billy Shaheen, warned that Republicans will capitalize on Obama's drug history if he wins the Democratic nomination.

"The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight," Shaheen told the Washington Post, "and one of the things they're certainly going to jump on is his drug use."

In the Washington Post interview published Dec. 12, Shaheen said Obama's own willingness to discuss his past drug use would "open the door" for the GOP: "It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'....There are so many openings for Republican dirty tricks. It's hard to overcome."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe denounced Shaheen's comments: "Hillary Clinton said attacking other Democrats is the 'fun part' of this campaign, and now she's moved from Barack Obama's kindergarten years to his teenage years in an increasingly desperate effort to slow her slide in the polls. Senator Clinton's campaign is recycling old news that Barack Obama has been candid about in a book he wrote years ago, and he's talked about the lessons he's learned from these mistakes with young people all across the country."

An earlier Huffington Post article from Dec. 11 described secretive efforts by the Clinton campaign to promote the Obama-cocaine issue. In the HuffPost article, Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, contended that the campaign has not tried to make use of Obama's past cocaine use and that it would not attempt to do so in the future. "Candidates personal lives should not be a part of this campaign," Wolfson said.

Responding to Shaheen's comments, Wolfson said today, "These comments were not authorized or condoned by the campaign in any way."

Allies of the Clinton campaign had sent emails to reporters and Democratic activists with a link to an Iowa Independent story by Douglas Burns headlined "The Politics Of Obama's Past Cocaine Use."

Burns' article on Obama posed a question that Clinton has been unwilling to raise herself and that has received little attention during the Democratic primary battles: If Barack Obama becomes the nominee, will the GOP be able to turn his acknowledged cocaine use into a debilitating issue?

Story continues below

Burns cited two June polls, one by Scripps Howard, the other by the New York Times. Both found that strong majorities of respondents believe that voters would not be willing to support a presidential candidate who admitted cocaine use. "What will be fascinating to watch is whether Americans' views on cocaine will play out in the election booths as a defining factor or anything close to that. If it does, that could spell trouble for Obama," Burns wrote.

"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man," Obama wrote in his book Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. "The highs hadn't been about that, me trying to prove what a down brother I was. Not by then, anyway. I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory."

Elsewhere in the book Obama writes, "We were always playing on the white man's court . . . by the white man's rules . . . . If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher . . . wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had the power and you didn't. . . . The only thing you could choose was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage. And the final irony: should you refuse this defeat and lash out at your captors . . . they would have a name for that too. Paranoid. Militant. . . . Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it."

Sources pointed out that in 1992, Bill Clinton complained when President George H. W. Bush tried to capitalize on Clinton's marijuana use. The Los Angeles Times reported in Oct. 1992:

Bush broached the marijuana issue by questioning whether Clinton could be believed when he makes campaign promises. "This guy couldn't remember in detail that he didn't inhale 20 years ago, and he can't remember what came out of his mouth 20 minutes ago," the President said as he stumped for votes in Florida, a state critical to his reelection hopes. It was the first time Bush had so directly brought up a problem that dogged the Arkansas governor in the spring -- his acknowledgment that he had tried marijuana while studying at Oxford University in Britain, but that he had not inhaled. [...] Clinton, responding to the day's attacks on him, told a reporter that he felt "sorry" for Bush. "I think that that sort of demeaning talk doesn't do him any good and only shows the American people how desperate he is to hold onto his job," Clinton said as he attended a dinner in Washington, D.C.

Allegations of drug use have become increasingly common in recent elections, including charges, denied by George W. Bush, that he was arrested for cocaine possession in 1972.

"I don't think they're piling on because I'm a woman. I think they're piling on because I'm winning," - Hillary Clinton

Why do you suppose Hillary is attacking Barack? Hmmm.

Um, shouldn't someone tell Hill...this is a big ole' Kettle shout-out from the POT! (Pun intended.) Look, I supported Bill Clinton twice and never regretted my votes, but even I thought his "I didn't inhale" statement was one of the most idiotic of his career. (Right up there with "I did not have sex with that woman..") I personally don't give a rat's ass if the future President did some drugs, drank like a fool, (as long as they didn't fry too many brain cells in the process...as is evidently the case with the current White House inhabitant) slept around and listened to rock and roll till their eardrums bled. "WHAT ARE YOUR IDEAS AND HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO HELP PULL OUR ONCE GREAT COUNTRY OUT OF ITS PLUNGING TAILSPIN OF DOOM?" That's it Folks....that's all I want to know. This other stuff is just bullshit. Dumb move from the HRC camp. Really dumb.

NH is a very important primary and the job of Chairman is one of great importance. Do you think this very important Clinton official would go off message at a critical time like this, I don't think so.

When you think that the Clintons are not behind this attack, the Clintons are behind this attack.

What in the History of the Clintons leads you to believe that they are above Cheating and Lying. David Gergen said of the Clintons, "They lie with such ease, it's troubling". This from a good friend of the Clintons, truer words have never been spoken. Hmmmmmmm

Both the Democrats and Republicans use such attacks. But we benefit by seeing how the candidate functions under these circumstances.

I want them to PROVE to me that they are qualified for the job.

So far Clinton and Obama leave a lot to be desired.

They are past tense and dying on the vine this oountry will elect a women president one day. But what is offered this time does not cut it, and never will!

Nothing says business a usual like an attack on someone's admitted past 'mistakes.' Each day she is on the trail is another day that proves Hilary is just Newt Gingrich in a dress. She takes money from lobbyists, she lies...in short she is the same as every politician who has betrayed us in the last fifty years. The longer this campaign lasts, the less I like her.

Obama's response to this should be a curt nod with the word......'and?

Everyone a teenager in 1960 is wizened and
wise today... the crime in the 60's was not sharing.... people don't get as excited about it these days.

Trying and discussing it from the vantage point of actually having done so and gone on to be successful is a far different cry than denying it and pointing fingers about it.

Drug experimentation is not nearly the problem of lying this nation into a war against a country that had been sanctioned beyond its ability to defend itself as George Bush did, and every candidate on the republican side has supported and continues to support. People died, lots of people died, and there are 30,000 wounded right here under their noses because of it.

Be prepared to keep it in perspective.

We have defended the Clintons for this kind of personal attack since forever, and it is simply unacceptable for either of them to practice it now.

If Obama becomes the Democrat nominee, and the republicans bring it up after YEARS of disinterest bout their admited drunk and worse in our Whitehouse, I would expect every democrat in the country to be down their throat about it in a nano second.

Yes, the republicans will try, so serve them notice, and the media... no more of the sleazy slimy politics of personal destruction, and no media dare publish it without taking a stance on it.

No more of this he sez, he sez and you decide crap...the press is supposed to keep the electorate informed, and when something is
slimy, they need to have the balls to say so.
When lying the nation into a war is worse that experimenting with a drug, they need to say so.

It will be up to the blogs to keep it honest. No one on MSNBC thinks there was anything wrong with Huckabee rolling over for the religious right's partisan hatred and letting a convicted rapist go free to rape and kill again.

Clinton campaign issued the following statement:

Senator Clinton is out every day talking about the issues that matter to the American people. These comments were not authorized or condoned by the campaign in any way.

Mr Edsall should publish either a retracton or an addendum

"It really dates the messenger." (Plus 15)

But the problem as regards blow use IS the age of the messenger - they vote in significant numbers. I wonder if we're one or one half generation away from coke being any factor (alongside pot and as you note divorce). The which side of the Sixties were you on divide seems yet at work. Maybe though I don't give octogenarians enough credit! Hey, if Freud . . .

Planted questions, slimy e-mails, kindergarten attacks and now this. I don't know about fun but it is an amusing example of Hillary's leadership, maybe she is ready lead on day 1- just like George Bush.

And of course since "... Wolfson said today, "These comments were not authorized or condoned by the campaign in any way." " her supporters can rest easy knowing Hillary now has her campaign under control.

Oh, and can we have some more Bill fairy tales while the writers strike continues?

There are two aspects to this. First, Obama has been honest about his past. And this was when he was a teenager - the fact that he made it to where he is now shows a toughness of character and that he managed to make something of his life after some rough teenage years.

Second, if anyone wants to make an issue of this - I am waiting to hear an answer - the truth - on whether the other candidates used drugs, and when they used them. We already know Bill Clinton, John Edwards, John Kerry, and likely George Bush used drugs in college or even later. Will someone ask Hillary Clinton and get a straight answer from her on this?

Putting it in print was very dumb on Obamas' part. The pot stuff he could handle, but the reference to blow was foolish. Yea, the Repukes will knock his brains out with the cocaine use, but they have far more in their nasty little bag, believe you me. They'll first attempt to frame Obama as "inexperienced" and "reckless." The cocaine thing will feed off of that. They'll plant questions about him being a "muslim", make him defend it, and the negative ads will have most of the pea-brains convinced that Barrack helped plan 9/11. Obama is not good when he's in defense mode. His voice gets squeaky and he starts gesturing with his hands too much, and he stumbles over his words. They'll come out swinging from day one and they won't let up. The Karl Rove playbook says that you hit a person's strengths. Think of what's appealing about Barrack, and then think of its opposite. That's how they'll play it. There will also be a whisper campaign in the South that will be racial in nature. The Repukes will once again have to keep African-American turnout down in key precincts in Florida. It will get nasty.
