First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:20 PM ET

Republican Mitt Romney retorted to questions about his faith by surging rival Mike Huckabee on Wednesday, declaring that "attacking someone's religion is really going too far."

In an article to be published Sunday in The New York Times, Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

.
From a perspective of a 27 year old, 4th generation Asian American. My great, great, great grand father came to America in 1915.
.
On general principle, I agree with Romney. He should not be forced to disavow or debate his faith. PERIOD.
.
Religiosity is not important consideration. My parents are devoted Catholic, raised 11 children as Catholic. I love Jesus, but hate these pedophile priests. The Catholic Magisterium protects these predator priest. Going to Church is a hassle nowadays.
.
They say the problem with Obama is he is "addicted to the truth". That's great ! But I also refused to vote for anyone with a Halo above his head, nor do I want a man/woman who can fly.
.
I will vote for the one who will RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION, end the war, experienced in foreign policy [I don't consider living in Indonesia at age 7 as experience], education as a major issue, fair immigration policy, vast knowledge of national and international economics, foreign trade, good governance record [must be in attendance at least 90%], an environmentalist, good record of race relation, man/woman of steel, calm, cold [yes COLD] but collected WITH A DRY SENSE OF HUMOR.
.
Yale or Harvard degree not required. Legacy crap admission will be disqualified. At the very least, he has to be a good reader, speller, able to the word Nuclear [not nu-ku-lar].Her/His administration must not include anyone who had 5 draft deferments. She/he cannot have anyone in the White House staff, who does not know anything about the Cuban Missile crisis.
.
I don't care if that candidate had an affair, but, can't bring mistress in the same mansion where his current wife is sleeping. Tackiness is a disqualifier - NO EXCEPTION.
.
My President MUST have made MISTAKES, but learned from those experiences.
.
The qualifiers are: Gore, Clinton, Biden, Richardson and Dodd; for the Republican side: McCain, ok maybe Romney. Mom just reminded me Gore is a standby, in case he change his mind.
.
PS: this clan [53 votes] will vote in block only. All for one. One for all.

It is good that Republicans are bogged down in this Jesus-Devil debate. That way they are less likely to cause more real damage to the country.

As to which cult is better than the other, Christianity or Mormonism, I think the only fair way to decide that is to give free guns and bullets to all Christians and Moromons, and let them fight it out. Whoever wipes out the other group belongs to the right cult.

Regardless of the outcome, the world would be much better off with zero of one cult, and fewer of the other.

Turns out Huckabee is a mean-spirited, divisive
hate mongerer. Mormonism is no more weird than
Christianity. Christians believe God seperated into a holy ghost, who got mary pregnant while remaining a virgin, bore a son who was half human half diety, fathered by another part of that same diety. That God is three dieties, seperate but the same, and that Jesus is FULLY
human and FULLY divine?????? Then there is that whole six winged serifin thing....and you think Mormonism is weird?

This subject - the 'assortment' of the comments - the fact that this topic is #2 in hits perfectly illustrates why separation of church and state is so essential in America! ;)

Boy, were our forefathers on it! Thank God. (pun intended)

Why did Huckabee apologize? He asked a question, and the true answer would be "yes." It wasn't slander.

If Romney wants Huckabee to apologize, does that mean he is ashamed of his religious beliefs? Or just that he thinks it is prudent to hide them from the public?

Mormons believe God had sex with Mary to produce Jesus.
Mormons believe God lives in outer space
Mormons believe that people live on the sun and moon.
Mormons believe that Adam was God
Mormons believe that your goal is to become a God
Mormons believed the more wives you have, the better chance of going to heaven, which is actually another planet.
Mormons believe that if you turn your back to the Mormon church, you turn black

Do we really want a Mormon to be President?

I think this is truly, truly sad.

The evangelicals and the libs are piling on together. This moment COULD be bigger that Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee. It could be an opportunity to overcome some bigotry in our country.

The libs realize that the bigotry that's out there is not so severe that it would prevent most evangelicals from supporting Romney in the general election. So, allowing Romney to win the nomination would help a lot of people in this country to move beyond those prejudices. Humanity would take a small step forward.

Instead, those on the left that are always talking about tolerance and acceptance would rather help inflame the bigotry to defeat Romney in the primaries so they don't have to face him in a general election.

I think it's sad, really. Evangelicals and libs hand in hand, fomenting bigotry against Mormons.

Well, I'm off to get myself a Deep Dish Pizza and all the beer I can drink. With a little luck, I'll find myself a gal who is the complete opposite of Thalia, to join me.

Have a nice night, folks.

Actually, I hate to say it, Huckabee is right.

I'm LDS, and the scriptures (our scriptures) say that Jesus and the Devil were brothers, and the devil, of course, took the wrong route and yada yada yada, I think you know where I am going.

Still, I think that Huckabee should talk about the issues, not this crap.

He is also a Southern Baptist. I wonder how long it will take for him to 'come out of the closet'.

I am SICK UNTO DEATH of these ignorant bible thumpers who think it is perfectly fine to denigrate other people's beliefs...yeah, I'm talking about the so called evangelicals. If they want to take the Bible literally, well, heck, that's their right. But they should keep their yaps SHUT about anyone else's beliefs. We have had 6 years of this "We are the only real Christians crap." If I want to believe the moon is made of green cheese that is my right under freedom of religion and NO ONE has the right to base my fitness for public office based on my personal beliefs!!!!!

Jeezus, check out the closeup pictures of these two hairdos. If they don't look like two guys who would push The Button so fast it would make your head spin (or evaporate), then I don't know who does. Scary True Believers. Jack Out.

I have a question, regarding the Byline:

Just WHY is attacking someone's religion going too far?

No one is born with the belief structure of any religion imprinted on their brain (I am not speaking of ethnic groups such as ethnic Jews). You have to learn the set of beliefs, be taught or somehow otherwise teach yourself by reading, etc. You make the conscious choice to accept the philosophy and integrate it into your values.

How is "religion" therefore truly different than any other belief structure, other than some irrational polite or not so polite agreement that it is something not subject to debate (other than at the point of a sword or gun, apparently)? At their core they are all a view of the nature of reality and the world which orders their adherents view and often actions. If some looney toon is running down the street screaming the "sky is falling" they may believe it is but we dismiss them and their beliefs.

Do we give adherents of any other economic or political philosophy (communists, fascists, socialists, etc) such deference without subjecting them to debate (and often scorn or ridicule). Do pedophiles get a pass for "believing" what they do about sex with minors? Or thieves for not believing in "standard" views of private property? Their beliefs about the nature of reality (children are sexual beings or private property is meaningless or some other Darwinian theory of the strong deserve what they can take) are driving their actions and they often have strong beliefs in their views as justifying their actions.

Why, other than its historical snd continuing power and ingrained institutionalism does this belief system remain off limits for rational inspection?

When it really gets good is when you do not have to read articles anymore. That is because you have already read the minds in this country. Religion. Mark Twain could put it much better in words. Beware of these people speaking of religion. Why is it that only republicans try to pull this shit off?
