Bill Shaheen Resigns As Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire Co-Chair

Bill Shaheen, Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire Co-Chair, has announced he will step down from that position. His resignation comes in the wake of remarks he made concerning Clinton rival Barack Obama's past drug use, and his insinuation Obama not only used, but also dealt drugs.

In an email statement Shaheen wrote:

"I would like to reiterate that I deeply regret my comments yesterday . . . . I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign . . . . we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country."

Bill Shaheen is the husband of former New Hampshire governor and 2008 U.S. Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen.

I do not think it is a smear campaign against Obama. Obama himself stated about is drug use to a group of students. What Clinton camp did is only for the benefit of Obama should he become the nominee. Obama who claims to take matters in a positive sense must respond in the same tone. The fact is that Obama's use of of drugs at the age he is said to have done is illegal, there will be consequences, even though he was not caught at the time he did, specially when he himself talks of it in the public arena. It is nice of Clinton camp for expressing rightly on an issue. Thi in no way compares with what Hukabee said about Romney's Mormon religion. Even though he apologized, he already spewed the religious venom into presidential politics, and it no fault of Mitt Romney that he was born to Mormon parents even if christians have a bias against mormons.

Last summer, a few Clinton insiders -- headed by her Senate chief of staff, Tamera Luzzatto -- paid a presumably social visit to the Cape Cod, Mass., vacation home of a prestigious Democrat reported to be in Obama's corner. Luzzatto warned that Obama was ethically challenged because of his leadership PAC. My sources indicated that this was not an isolated incident, and the slush-fund story was spread widely.

In a later incident, a Democrat, not on Clinton's Senate or campaign staffs but close to her, a month ago approached a party activist who has not made a commitment with this message: Skeletons in Obama's closet would make him vulnerable if nominated. He did not elaborate and said the Clinton campaign would keep its anti-Obama information to itself, remembering mutually destructive assaults between Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt in 2004 that enabled John Kerry's nomination.

the question around here has been: "are you voting for clinton or obama?" this smear campaign stuff is so reminiscent of the rove, bush, and v.p darth vader mess we now have that i have no problem eliminating anyone who would use those same tactics - i don't care who she makes the fall guy.

i agree with those who suggest a pattern here - and i don't mean a pattern of people who have figured out how to get fired from a campaign staff to save them the trouble of quitting.

Obama's admission of drug use not once, but many times, tells others "I used drugs, and was a loser, but eventually I worked it out, and now I'M RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!!!"

A known past drug user, especially a cocaine user would make the job of parents and teachers on educating their children not do drugs almost impossible. It would have a huge negative effect on the overall campaign of this nation's drug war. The media is giving too much credit on Mr. Obama's so called honesty about his past drug use according to his own words. It is better Bill Clinton or W lying about their past than to have a known past cocaine user in the white house. Don't hold truth so dearly, after all Santa Claus is not real, are you going to call on parents lying? As a parent, are you looking forward to your kids telling you and the teachers to back off regarding not using drug and someday I can be a president too? Shaheen did a very stupid thing, probably at the urging of FOB. The smear tactic failed miserably since the story is about Shaheen and the desperate Clinton Campaign.
