Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five.

A panel of 600 industry figures selected the five acts to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 10 in New York. To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.

Oh what is with the gnashing of the teeth by some of you old zepplin heads about Madonna? I figured most of you were smart enough to look past her persona and really see her music.

Madonna absolutely deserves this in every sense. Aside from being the most successful female artist, hands down, of all time( which shouldn't matter), she is also the third most acclaimed female( www. rollingstone.com)

She started her career playing the NYC underground, in ska, punk, and rock bands EMMY and the Breakfast Club( among others). She played guitar and drums as well as lead singer, writing hundreds of songs in the process. All the producers she she has worked with over the years have all given her enormous credit for knowing the MUSIC part of music, not just lyrics.

Then there is her influence. Both good and bad, from Liz Phair and Alanis to Britney and Christina to Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. Madonna has influenced every good and bad trend over the last 25 years. She literally changed music, some for good, some not. Point is, you can't blame her for the bad without acknowledging all the truly good she spawned.

No serious music lover can deny she has had some of the best music of the past 25 years either. Her back catalogue is stuff of legends, songs that everyone can sing and knows the lyrics to. Like her or not, she is very talented and very deserving on getting in on the first try. Wow, congrats girl!

What song has the Dave Clark 5 had in steady rotation that could even come close to Steppenwolf's "Born to be wild"? John Kay and Steppenwolf have toured for 40 years and sold millions of albums. I've never understood how Kay's timeless writing,(Monster - solo albums),powerful blues-rock vocals, Have failed to put him in the Springsteen-Dylan league

I gave up thinking that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was of any significance years ago.
Dave Clark Five?
The Ventures?
Mellencamp?
Ha! Really?
At this rate I'm sure we'll eventually see Stacy Q and Men Without Hats.

What a bunch of meaningless horseshit!

Too bad Madonna decided to support the abortionist Hillary for President and abandon pro-life fans. Papa Don't Preach, Madonna? You forgot all about that huh?????? You gave us hope that finally a major star gave the pro-lifers a voice by releasing Papa Don't Preach "He says that hes going to marry me, that we can raise a little family, maybe we'll be alright, its a sacrife......" "My friends keep telling me to give it up, said that I'm too young I ought to live it up, what I need right now is some good advice!!!!!!!"

Talentwise- you deserve to get it hands down. Supporting HillaryabortionistClinton? HELL NO!

Nice to see Mellencamp get in. He's one of my e favorite arists of the last 25 years. He is a great song writer. "Scarecrow" & " The Lonesome Jubilee" are two of the best albums from the 80's

Besides my previous mentions of Roxy Music and Mott the Hoople, it is painfully aware that metal gets shunted off the path. OK - Cream, Hendrix and Zeppelin, the three major "proto-metal" bands are in. It must have killed then to get AC/DC in. Look how long it took for Black Sabbath to get in, the first major band to put that dark edge in heavy rock. How many bands have been influenced by them? Will we ever see the day when Motorhead, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden will get in? Don't hold your breath.

Madonna gets into the R&R Hall of Fame before actual rock acts like Kiss, Boston, Rush, Chicago and Genesis? I agree more than ever with what the Sex Pistols said in their letter of rejection to the hall ... it's a "piss stain"

Madonna has been peddling her crap for 25 years and she gets a place in the so-called Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. I want to know why one of the most innovative bands ever, since 1972, hasn't even been nominated. I am talking about Roxy Music. Bryan Ferry and company amazed me when I saw them open for Humble Pie 35 years ago. This is the band that also gave us Brian Eno, who worked with two present Hall of Famers, U2 and Talking Heads. Also conspicuous by absence is Mott the Hoople and at least Ian Hunter

Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro. The greatest pop songwriters....ever (so far). I could have left some off but what a start.

Still no Iggy and the Stooges.

I revere Leonard Cohen but any place that calls itself a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and doesn't include Iggy and his partners in crime might as well be a Disney World attraction.

Madonna is talented in many respects, but a rock and roller? Give me a fucking break.

And yeah, the DC5? Are the MC5 in the Hall of Fame? I'd be surprised.

I guess Jann Wenner is afraid that Iggy might spread peanut butter on his tuxedo or break champagne bottles and roll around in the broken glass. But that's rock and roll, and maybe it's a tribute to Iggy that he hasn't become part of that country club.
