Obama And Oprah

CNN:

Oprah Winfrey's recent campaign swing with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was greeted with wild cheers and record-breaking crowds.

But some of the talk show host's fans aren't happy she's become politically outspoken, and many are sounding off on Oprah's Web site.

Oprah's sincerity in politics is laughable. Where has she been the last 8 years? Suddenly she loves a candidate. Suddenly she loves his politics. What does she love? Does she think GW is an absolute fool? Is she against the war? Is she anti-corporate? Does she think that world trade is imbalanced? What exactly has she fallen in love with? What does Oprah have to do with any of this? She has taken the side show to the next level.

The politics of both Clinton and Obama are terrible: tax and spend and punish success while entrenching wasteful government programs because they get votes.
If either wins, the end of the US dollar that Bush started will accelerate in earnest.

Flat tax and balanced budget amendment is the answer.

Funny how when Schwarzenegger brought his two cents to the political arena no one told him to shut up because he was a celebrity. Same with Rondald Regan, Sonny Bono, etc. Yet the Limbaughs,O'Reillys and other right wing nuts holler foul when a celebrity supports a Democrat. It seems a lot of people have forgotten that celebrities are tax paying citizens and have all the rights to freedom of speech that non-celebrites have. Only feable minded people would have to continue to affirm that Oprah does not speak for them. Oprah seems damn capable of speaking for herself and I did not hear her saying she was speaking for her audience. If those listening are influenced by what she says, so what..There are 27% of people in this country who are influenced and inspired by W..

Who Oprah wants to be president is of little concern to me. I do question why she would choose someone like Obama with so little experience over an accomplished and intelligent woman like Hillary. It really makes me question Oprah's judgement. it is obvious she is choosing Obama just because he is black. It doesn't say much for her political intelligence.

Obama's black? Really? I hadn't noticed. I did notice that he is probably the brightest candidate in the race (Former Editor of the Harvard Law Review--not a small task). If it matters, I'm white and could give a shit if he's black, a woman, hispanic, anglo, or whatever. He'd be a good President. We know what a mentally challenged President can do. Let's get a smart one and see how that works. In that respect, I'm glad Oprah agrees with me. How fricking complicated and surreal does it have to get before we use our own noggins?

shame on oprah for turning her back on the clintons...
she has always been about common sense and decency and doing what is right...
the clintons are just that.
Oprah has lost all credibility now...because she dissed bill and hillary...publicly....
very sad :(

Obama is one of the few poeple running that doesn't turn my stomach. Oprah is a bit full of herself these days, but I think her heart is basically in the right place. Oprah's attempt to turn him into "The One" (We speak your name) Please! If she pushes too hard, there will be a serious backlash, if there isn't already. Fickle country, no?

I rather like Obama, I just don't need Oprah turning him into a religious figure. If he heads that direction, he'll lose me.

Repost:

My Dear Supporters,

Here are your marching orders.

1) Mention Obama's race as often as possible, the Republican southern strategy works, let's use race-baiting to our advantage.

2) Diminish Oprah's support by repeating Step 1, while also mentioning that Oprah's skin color is closer to Obama's that your own.

3) Diminish Oprah's support more, by not stating the she and Obama are both from Chicago and have been friends for years.

4) Even though you're at work when 'Oprah' airs, shout out as often as possible that you will not watch Oprah's show again.

5) Imply that Oprah herself is racist because she has never publicly shown affirmative action to a white politician before.

6) Go on as many blog sites as possible and repeat Steps 1 thru 5.

7) Use the words 'Inexperienced' in association with Obama. People will buy that because he's thin, young and doesn't have to dye his hair yet. Never ever, mention that Obama was a community organizer, professor of constitutional law, a state senator before becoming a u.s. senator.

8) Frequently state that I Am 'experienced' because I was a first lady for 20 years in arkansas and the WH before becoming a u.s. senator. Sleeping with Bill does have it perks.

9) Imply that Obama is a drug dealer, like all those young, thin, non-hair dyed black guys on 'The Wire'.

10) Never ever mention that other 'myth' about black men, it just might lose us more of the young woman and gay vote.

11) Now go forth and have some 'Fun'.

Signed,
Your Highness InEvitable

We have very strict rules in this country about what women may, or may not do. And for black women, there are rules on top of that.

For example, women may not carve a turkey at Thanksgiving. Can you imagine sitting down at the Thanksgiving table, with the male at one end and the female at the other end, and the female stands up, grabs the carving knife, and starts cutting? It would be absolute anarchy.

Oprah breaks all the rules. Politely, but she does anyway. She is a black woman, and is therefore not supposed to be intelligent, articulate, persuasive, powerful, rich, popular, and an important voice. But she is.

Women are not allowed to "endorse" presidential candidates. That is something that only men can do. Or, if a woman does, it's quietly and in private. But not to make a big splash, and go all out, and say "This is the guy."

People are afraid. Because if Oprah Winfrey can persuade many Americans to vote for Obama, or at least not to vote for the canned Dem from D.C. (Hillary), then that suggests that the elite white male D.C. power structure is on its way out. It suggests that more and more other people not only want to have a voice in choosing the candidate, but are going to stand up and use that voice.

Scary stuff.

Oprah is the one who should be running for POTUS.

Where's my soap box? Oh, here it is . . .

If you don't get at least a bit of criticism from some corners, you're probably not standing up for anything meaningful at all.
