Rupert

In a no-holds-barred interview with the UK Independent, movie star Rupert Everett lets loose on some of Hollywood's biggest names. Everett, the break out star of 1997's "My Best Friend's Wedding" and a great friend of Madonna, insulted everyone from Diane Keaton to Al Pacino. But the Brit, who is gay, had the most venom for George Clooney:

"[George] Clooney thinks that, provided he does films which are politically committed, he's allowed to do Ocean's 11, 12, and 13", he says. "But the Ocean's movies are a cancer to world culture. They're destroying us."

And Clooney the man? "He's not the brightest spark on the boulevard. He'll be president one day. Mark my words, if he's straight, he'll be president."

Of the other Hollywood legends at the end of his tongue lashing, Everett told interviewer Amol Rajan:

"De Niro, Redford, Keaton, Allen, Pacino ... They're all just tragic parodies of themselves. Al Pacino looks like a mad old freak now. I say give it a rest, or go and do some serious stuff...

The other day I saw a film called Because I Said So with Diane Keaton, and I thought, 'here's one of the women we loved most in 1970s cinema, debasing and humiliating herself in this load of trash'.

"Why? Because we're sheep, we just follow the herd ... It's just part of the huge amount of product that's put out now that's really bad. And it's our fault. We're all responsible for how the culture is. You can't draw a distinction between the celebrity nonsense on television and the film industry."

Everett will next be seen in a British film "St Trinian's," in which he plays a headmistress who has a very strong resemblance to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles.

Well, this commentary coming from this cinematic giant must mean something! Iconic ground breaking life affirming movie making such as "My Best Friend's Wedding" will survive the passage of time and be on record across millennia right there with Shakespeare..... yeah, yeap.

What a pathetic little man. I reckon he's a right winger; obtuse, malicious and outright stupid.

The posts on this blog are so typical of the current state of corporatized American "liberals". Someone says something provocative that criticizes the status quo. Rather than actually debate them or their ideas- the "leftists" stumble over themselves as they indulge in the basest character assasination and gay baiting all to defend the corporate status quo. Learned at the teet of Bill O'Reilly.

Sure Rupert's a whore- he's a working actor- but at least he's a whore who speaks his mind.

But I forgot, don't rock the boat and don't say anything remotely critical about sacred cows like George Clooney.

George Clooney IS the establishment- he is the American liberal ESTABLISHMENT- he is as left as you are allowed to go kiddies. And it's not left enough.

How about dismissing me with an AIDS joke now?

I noticed no one minded what Rupert said about poor Diane Keaton though.

She's no longer fashionable so anything goes.

Apparently, Mr. Everett failed to watch HIMSELF as Sherlock Holmes. He was absolutely stinko, and probably ruined it for other actors in the future.

While he is entitled to his opinions, some actors may have fallen prey to the almighty dollar, Rupert has fallen prey to the almighty plastic surgeon. Most of what I have read about him over the last few years are comments on how his face has changed radically and not for the better. How is making fluff movies any more of a moral outrage than obsessing over your looks and trying to be a "male ingenue" when you are in your 40's?

Remember it's just his opinion. Just the same what he says is true and many agree with him. And just to prove his point we can expect more of the same.

"The vitriolic responses to Mr. Everett's observations only prove his point about people being sheep."
True.
Rupert has done great stuff. True.
Rupert has done some crap. True.
We are all to blame. True.
You are getting paid for reading this. False.

I've often thought the same about these actors and others including, but not limited to, Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp and Dustin Hoffman. If I see any of these bloated caricatures listed in the cast, I won't watch the movie. Never underestimate the intelligence or lack of maturity of the American public as portrayed by the juvenile postings of the majority of the posters here.

You guys are missing the point.

I think Rupert's right. Hollywood's top-tier actors have enough clout to write their own tickets. Instead of putting out garbage, they could be developing movies to help better the world. Seriously -- what I would give to see Dustin Hoffman in the modern-day version of "All the President's Men" instead of crap like "Meet the Fockers."

I had to laugh at this interview. I worked with this guy on a movie, and when he found out the producers were digitally airbrushing the leading actress, he threw a hissy fit and demanded a digital six pack added to his abs.

Who's shallow now???

I feel sorry for him that he felt the compulsion towards these utterances of his. It gives me pause when on this and other sites to wax more thoughtful myself.
